Biologists warn ‘extinction denial’ is the latest anti-science conspiracy theory

Biodiversity scientists are being urged to “fight the creeping rise of extinction denial” that has spread from fringe blogs to influential media outlets and even into a U.S. Congressional hearing. The call to arms came in a paper published in Nature Ecology & Evolution last month by Alexander Lees, senior lecturer in conservation biology at Manchester Metropolitan University, and colleagues.

“Many of the same individuals that routinely seek to downplay the impacts of climate change have written articles understating the biodiversity loss crisis,” Lees says. “Denialists have sought to obfuscate the magnitude of both extinctions and loss of bio-abundance.”

This doesn't at all suprise me, it is just an extension of the overall denial that there is any anthropogenic impacts on the environment or anything to be concerned about.

These are very worrying and challenging times indeed.

Given the madness and disgusting behavior of humanity all throughout this year alone, this isn't surprising at all, as much as I hope for it to be. Just like with their views on the climate crisis, the extinction crisis is one more urgent problem that these denialists are going to ignore until they are all doomed by their own inaction. The worst fear for me is the fact that there are people in government positions around the world who likely believe this load of bull.

I don't think they necessarily believe in this. It is unfortunately the public / masses who are the ones who believe it hook, line and sinker.

Whether it is true or not is besides the point / irrelevant to these kinds of bad actors within governments.

Often their only concern is rolling back legislation that gets in the way of making fast and lucrative profit as fast as possible.

That is a pretty fair assessment of the situation.

Again, I couldn't have said it any better!

Here is another relevant article. It is relevant because it touches on scientific denial, including climate change, which is a twin issue if you will with biodiversity loss.

Noam Chomsky: Rising Anti-Science Rhetoric Feeds the Pandemic and Climate Crisis

Today, a special broadcast: an hour with Noam Chomsky, the world-renowned political dissident, linguist and author, who just turned 93 years old. Chomsky spoke to Democracy Now! prior to the discovery of the Omicron coronavirus variant, but he predicted new variants would emerge. “If you let the virus run rampant in poor countries, everyone understands that mutation is likely, the kind of mutation that led to the Delta variant, now the Delta Plus variant in India, and who knows what will develop,” Chomsky said.
