Such a number of animals could only come from Florida as it would have been impossible with any other partnership. It is very important for the State that this secondary colony thrives, as this has never been attempted before in such scale on the European continent.
- The park has received a new male Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus) called Mekong from Ústí nad Labem Zoo.
The park's former breeding pair wasn't successful, so the park moved away from the former male Pi and received this new male to accompany Rawa, the female individual.
Hello Luis, thank you so much, Bioparc is a beautiful zoo! Do you know if Andean bears, tapir, Andean Condors, maned wolves, mountain lions, capybaras, tamarins, coatis, capuchin monkeys, guanacos, harpy eagles, or giant anteaters will be part of the expansion? If you can’t say I understand, I’ve been looking forward to the expansion for years now.
Hello everyone, English is not my first language, but I will do my very best to share details about our upcoming expansion of Bioparc Fuengirola.
Brief introduction first, I'm Luis, the lead architect of the project, one that has been in the works for well over a decade. We had many planning stages and now we are in our execution phase that is coming to an end.
Our expansion of Bioparc Fuengirola focuses on the tropical Americas and it is by far our biggest and most challenging project since the opening of the new park.
As we shared in our social media previously, the center piece of our project is an aquarium, that will represent the Great Mayan Reef in spectacular detail.
In addition to our aquatic exhibitions, we will have a focus on keystone species from the tropical forests of South America, since the climate here in Costa del Sol allows it. Some of these magnificent species are the giant otter, jaguar, spider monkey, howler monkey among others.
In the future it is our goal to add manatees to this exhibition, but they will not be present on the opening phase. We are currently designing a habitat that meets all of the challenging prerequisites that these incredible animals need to thrive in captivity. Our manatees will come from an institution in the State of Florida and will become the biggest colony of its kind in Europe.
Hope you are all as excited as we are and hope to see you soon in our Costa del Sol.
Taking under account how little space they have, I doubt they'll get anything other than what is supposed to be in the plans. And for the better, the last thing Fuengirola needs is more animals in inadequate exhibits.Hello Luis, thank you so much, Bioparc is a beautiful zoo! I did a quick measurement in Google Maps and it says that the expansion area it's 4.037,98 m². Doing some quick maths, it's basically a lil bit less than an acre.I was asking because I'd heard that the area was going to be the park's largest expansion yet, I thought about 20 acres? How many acres is the park currently? I figured a lot of South American species could fit into 20 acres, especially considering how many species are housed in the 25 acres Bioparc Valencia.

According to, again, Google Maps, the entire park is 18.558,84 m². Not the best at math but that's more or less 4 acres and a half.

I visited in October 2023. Concept art showed a large walk through aviary with capuchin monkeys and free flying birds connected to the reptile house. The theming looked fantastic!Hello Luis, thank you so much, Bioparc is a beautiful zoo! Nothing known for the date, you can find photos of the construction on the gallery and take a good glimpse using google maps outside of the park.Is it already known when the new South America area will open? And are there any photos of the construction update?
No pictures sorry. The framework was huge, not a great width but pretty tall. The pieces of theming that cover the framework are not entirely shrouding the framework making it look very similar to the orangutan enclosure with it's mix of modernish architecture and creative temple theming.Have you taken any photos of how is going the expansion? Did you see anything related to it appart of what you have said??
I seem to remember it saying 2024. Can't remember when however. Is it already known when the new South America area will open? And are there any photos of the construction update?
