I was surprised to see this magical sounding little zoo in Spain did not have a thread yet, so here we go.
Again thanks to the IZES newsletter, Tim Brown tells us that the zoo has inherited or taken over the now closed collection of the Senda bird park in Churriana, and even more incredibly can now boast of the second largest collection of hornbills in the world:eek:.
The collection includes 7 Mindanao wrinkled hornbill more than half the European population.
The total collection has no less than 57 hornbills in 16 species (not named).

The Senda bird park only lasted one season, and will be run as an ex-situ breeding centre.

They have also bred the fantastic New Caledonian giant gecko:)
 
It's true, it is unforgivable that me or other Spaniard did not open this thread on the Fuengirola Zoo, :( kiang thanks for doing it! :)I have the guidebook of the zoo, that can be scanned images to upload to the gallery, will also leave a link (spanish/english) on its report of activities for the year 2007 (last by the moment) which refers, among other things, about the hornbills colection...

Do you mean Aceros leucocephalus? Currently, ISIS only lists 3.7 birds in 5 collections. That is excluding the Fuengirola Zoo. Please confirm!
 
The ISIS database is not 100% accurate, and the report indicates that a species is not on display.

• The species is listed by IUCN, International Union for the Conservation of Nature as "vulnerable"

• In 2008 only seven pups were born in Europe and nine in the world

On December 19, 2008, at 10.15 in the morning. Liberia, a female pygmy hippo (Hexaprotodon liberiensis), surprised the team from the zoo with the birth of a little baby only 5 kg. This is the third time that this species breeds in Fuengirola Zoo, where it has done previously in 2005 and 2007. Visitors can watch as mother and daughter on the premises that creates a void in equatorial Africa, one of the three ecosystems representing the park.
 
I will be visiting Fuengirola Zoo at the end of April / beginning of May when I will be on holiday in Benalmadena. From what I have seen, it looks a brilliant place and I am really looking forward to going there. Does anyone have any photos of the animals / enclosures there that they could upload please? :)

Hello Mhale, take a look at the Gallery in "Spain - Other", where I posted some photos taken in Fuengirola zoo. And I will keep uploading it some in next weeks...

I'm very surprised about the new on the hornbills. When I was here (2005 I think) they had only Rhinoceros hornbill (B. rhinoceros silvestris). There I found my rhinoceros hornbill feather.

Are all these new hornbills on display or are kept private?
 
Thanks a lot my friend. Then the hornbills aren't properly at Fuengirola zoo, only gestionated by this zoo but in another place.

New babies of ring tailed lemurs:

One of the births was unexpected, just in front of the visitors. This specie is at the zoo under a European Program of Endangered Species.

Three little babies of Ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), two of them are twins, have been the last births which have happened in Fuengirola Zoo. Furthermore, for surprise of visitors, the first baby, only six weeks old, were born just in the middle of the public like in an improvised documentary of nature.

Catta lemurs are from Madagascar Island and they live with three other species of lemur in the Baobab tree, from the Madagascar Island, that the park has recreated faithfully which is more than 25 metres tall.

Question: Is this zoo REALLY that small? Only 2 hectares? Actually, I looked it up and some sites say it's only 1.5 (or 1,5 for you Europeans) hectares! That's only 4 acres for us Americans! Omaha's Lied Jungle is almost half that size all by itself! My local Indianapolis Zoo is 60 acres, and it's considered a "small urban zoo".

From the online map of this zoo, it appears much bigger. What is wrong here?
 
Does anyone have a map...I can't find one and I don't speak spanish. LOL
