Bioparc Fuengirola Bioparc Fuengirola

Visited in April 2015.

This is a small zoo but they make good use of the space with curved exhibits and elevation changes giving the illusion of larger enclosures.

Most of the animals have plenty of room and you can see species that are not in all collections. I really enjoyed the Binturong, Sumatran Tigers and the Gharial. My only concern was the chimpanzees seemed under stimulated.
The posters advertising the bioparc shows a very mature komodo dragon but ones on display were smallish.
Something that really struck me was how easier it is for display tropical species in a hot country.

Having just recently visited, I must say I was mightily impressed with this zoo. A clever use of space and structure for such a restricted footprint (London take note!) when you consider they house 3 species of great ape for example. Some interesting shared exhibits too: the chimps are mixed with Serval (though not at the same time!)

On my visit work had begun on a South American zone. Anyone know what species they plan to house?

new on expansion ?
Yes !
We learn on Zoo Inside Facebook page that the zoo is building a new south american/amazonian area near the indo-pacific area for reptiles.
The new exhibits include : a coral reef tank, other tanks for freshwater fishes, a bigger tank with a tunnel (for manatees eventually), some enclosurses for small monkeys and an outdoor enclosure for giant river otters.

Manatees! And more giant otters in Spain! These are the news one needs at these moments!

Asmara the tigress died on April 28th, she had a degenerative kidney disease and also had a tumor near her heart which caused a thrombosis that killed her.

On better news, 2 Palawan Pheasant chicks were born on May 18th.

I'm amazed about the location of that new exhibit. Is there really enough space for that (= without replacing other exhibits/animals)? Or did the zoo get new land (if my memories are correct, the zoo is completely surrounded by houses/buildings)?
