Bioparc Valencia Bioparc Valencia News

The AI was with "German" freeze sperm. I don't remember from what zoo. Ok...Not from any zoo, but the Leibniz Institute after 11 years frozen, in 2020 was used for the AI.

In the Video about the Thomson's gazelles I recongized one individual: On my visit last year I saw one of the female has lost her ears. One day later I saw also a deer at Safari Madrid has lost one ear. Does anyone know how this can happen?

Bioparc Valencia in "countdown" for the birth of the first African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) at the park!
The need to address the ex situ conservation of these endangered species has led two years ago to resort to artificially inseminating one of the females. For this, Bioparc relied on specialists from the "Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research" (IZW) in Berlin, the only professionals in the world who have successfully practiced this complicated technique. The technical team of the Valencian park has been implementing all the necessary protocols to guarantee the well-being of both the pregnant female and the rest of the members of her group. A specialized work team has been formed with the aim of favoring the natural behavior of the pachyderms at all times and, at the same time, controlling the health of the future mother and the evolution of the pregnancy. Improvements have also been made to adapt the enclosures in anticipation of the needs of the different stages of pregnancy, birth and the first weeks of the expected offspring. The veterinary team continues with the exhaustive hormonal follow-up through blood tests, which is being essential to know the proximity of the birth. In all these processes, precautions have been taken with specific shifts and the future mother is monitored 24 hours a day. In short, everything is ready in this "countdown"; although with caution and emotion from all those involved since both the female and the Bioparc staff are "first timers".

Live birth of the first elephant at BIOPARC Valencia
The first African Elephant calf to be born at Bioparc Valencia has now arrived to 22-year-old female Matla, the oldest in the herd. The calf was born at 4:20 am on day 653 of the pregnancy, and so far, seems to have been a fairly problem free birth.

Birth news!:
This morning, BioParc Valencia's very first African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) calf has been born!
After 653 days of pregnancy on a full moon night, the female Matla has given birth with complete naturality. A for now, the raising of the calf is going on correctly.

First week of life of the first elephant born in BIOPARC
BioParc Valencia have released an update on the progress of their week-old elephant calf (with a video included again), in the title it has been described as intense, but it seems to be a fairly positive situation, and things look like they are running smoothly for now. It appears things are progressing slowly and steadily, and 2 of the next big milestones will be being aloud outside and being introduced to more herd members.

New species:
BioParc Valencia has received two female Hartmann's mountain zebras (Equus zebra hartmannae) from Dvur Kralove!
These two females are called Lisha y Hermina, they are both seven years old and have replaced Grant's zebras that used to live alongside white rhinos, ostriches, marabous and sacred ibises in the dry savanna. The Grant's zebra herd is now residing at Natura Parc in Mallorca.
They have adapted well to living alongside animals of other species. They plan to bring a stallion to start a breeding herd.

Cebra de Hartmann, nueva especie en BIOPARC Valencia

News:
Ending the year on a sad note, Calypso, the one and only Ethiopian klipspringer (Oreotragus oreotragus saltatrixoides) in all of Europe has passed away at Bioparc Valencia. These aren't unexpected news, he has doubled the age a klipspringer naturally lives standing at 26 years old, but still sad to see.
He will be greatly missed, a very charming little creature.

Sad news! Second ungulate species disappear from Spain and from Europe this year...

Alongside the last mazama at Faunia these have been two big losses in my book... for better or for worse I've seen both species, but I'll still dearly miss them. :(

Very sad news, no more klipspringers in Europe! I didn't realise they only had one left. :(
