Bioparc Valencia Bioparc Valencia News

"Chispi" the 21 years old female chimpanzee are pregnant, she will have a baby very soon...

I have read back a bit and couldn't find any info, so if it's already been said i'm sorry,
but have the red-flanked duikers arrived yet from the USA? (and if so, any idea from where they'll be coming/have come?)

Every time I've gone to Bioparc I only saw red forest duikers, a few times,no other kind, and no idea whether other species of duikers will arrive, or when, or from were ...

About the news on the arrival of new species of duikers to Bioparc, can anyone tell me where to find information about this topic? many thanks!

Here is some posts about the duikers coming to Bioparc Valencia eventually.

Though aim pretty sure neither has arrived at Valencia yet, I heard that the red-flanked had been sourced from Los Angeles, I have spoken with a keeper several times caring for the Red forest duikers (arrived sometime in 2008) already at Bioparc Valencia. I dont know much about the yellow-backed duikers at this stage, only that they will arrive sometime in 2009 if everything goes according to plan.

Bioparc Valencia seems to be building up the largest collection of duikers in any European zoo (Nürnberg in Germany keep Red and yellow-backed duiker)

Yesterday Bioparc official web page confirmed that, red flanked duikers (from LA zoo) are in adaptation process, we can see them in 2009 (I hope soon) and Thomson gazelles from Ramat Gan, are in adaptation process too.

Not on the day I was there last februari. They are the most relaxed fossa's I've ever seen! They were enjoying the sun and being lazy, it was awesome to see them this way! :D

This is a mistake (sorry) the pregnant female was "Mirinda" the "Chispi" mother's (37 yo)and today i read that she has a new male baby, born on 03/31

Elephants

I'm still reading through the Elephant Encyclopaedia (), and it lists a total of nine elephants for Bioparc Valencia. Good news for Jambo if this is true, because the other eight are cows :D

However, my question is this: does the zoo really have room for nine (maybe ten if Kito is imported too) African elephants? That's some mighty impressive herd and holdings if they do

In fact the elephant herd is composed by 1.9 elephants Jambo the bull, 6 younger cows (between 4 and 6 yo)they arrived from a Namibian ranch, and 3 adult females, 2 arrived from Moscow and the last adult cow arrived from a circus (Circo Mundial) and of course bioparc can keep all 10 elephants :D

Thanks guys that is fantastic that the fossa dont pace, have you got any pics of the island? I think this is a great way to keep them and more zoos should adopt this method

The island is actually very small and I do not think it is a good exhibit for fossas, it`s just too small. Like many other enclosures in Valencia which are on the small size.

I agree with you, the island for the fossas seems too small...

Do you know if there is any mating between male Gorilla 'Mambie' and either of the two females?

Is male 'Jitu' still living alone or have any other males arrived yet?

Thanks in advance for any information.
