Bioparc Valencia Bioparc Valencia News

Not too keen on water with gorillas ... given their capacity for drownings.
Even though in nature natural bais in the central African rainforest are part and parcel of them wading through low waters ...

Interesting to see a gorilla in the water, I don't think I've ever seen it before. Probably great for him to be able to cool down, and I'm sure its good enrichment, if potentially dangerous.

This exhibit is largely seperated from the public with a moat I think, presumably it is also hot-wired on the visitors' side to prevent animals escaping? I imagine the designers were more worried about the smaller primates and sitatunga escaping through it than the gorillas though!

They'll frequently wade and splash in water if given the opportunity. As KB said above, its also part of their natural environment in the swampy 'Bai' clearings of the rainforests.

Some years ago a pair in Jos Zoo ,Nigeria actually learnt to swim in the deepwater part of their moat. Most drownings occur when Gorillas suddenly/accidentally fall into deep-water moats when they haven't had opportunity to use shallower areas first. A gorilla that knows the depths and limitations of its watermoat is far less likely to have an accident.

Bioparc Valencia has released a statement following a serious accident which occurred in the early hours of this morning: A female Giraffe was being transported from Jerez to Valencia overnight when the trailer was hit from behind by a lorry and the Giraffe involved injured to an extent that she had to be PTS on her eventual arrival in Valencia. No human was seriously hurt in the accident. Condolences to all involved :(

The accident occurred at 00.30 h . Today October 19 at km . 240 as a result of a collision in the back of the special transportation when traveling from Jerez BIOPARC bound for Valencia.

Saturday October 19, 2013 . At about 00.30 am today in the convoy of a vehicle and a special trailer to transport giraffes was rammed from behind by a truck at km . 240 A3 . The collision caused the rollover and trailer and have been injured by trauma both the animal and the veterinarian who accompanied the transport specialist .

By ruling out serious personal injury , the vet has given priority attention to the animal performing first aid maneuvers to facilitate BIOPARC moving to Valencia, where he waited for the veterinarian and technical team from the morning, when they were notified of the incident.

After a complicated operation , it has managed to raise the trailer with crane for placement on a truck platform and has resumed the transfer to the park, where it arrived a few minutes before 8 am.

While waiting for the autopsy to assess internal injuries , probable cause full prostration and utter inability of the animal to enter , clinical diagnosis which has supported the team's decision Valencia veterinarian euthanize BIOPARC Giraffe has been a comminuted fracture of both mandibular rami with abundant loss of bone tissue. An injury of this nature makes it impossible to recover the functionality of the jaw and the animal's ability to feed himself , even in the absence of other associated lesions .

The new giraffe was called " Jerez " , and was born in Jerez Zoobotánico the May 2, 2011 . This female was Baringo giraffe Bioparc join the group , along with its sister " Bulería " which came in 2011 , on the recommendation of EAF ( captive breeding program ) of this species to mate with the male of Bioparc Valencia, " Julius" , born in Aalborg Zoo , Denmark.

The European zoos belonging to the EAZA maintain their complex animal populations through captive breeding programs , called EEP or ESB . The object is to maintain genetically viable populations and self-sufficient , so you do not need to import more copies of their countries of origin. And simultaneously , reproduced copies in zoos can be genetically suitable for reintroduction to their natural environment, if this is necessary . For this, the coordinator of each program strives to control its population genetics , and avoid inbreeding . And therefore it is necessary to make recommendations for transfer of specimens in search of the ideal partner . Under the framework exist today EAZA breeding program for 370 species , many of them endangered in its habitat. Through these programs , some species are more abundant in zoos than in the wild. For example , there are more Sumatran tigers in captivity Siberia or in nature . And something similar happens with Baringo giraffe .

Baringo giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildii ), also called giraffe Rothschild giraffe Uganda and is one of the nine giraffe subspecies recognized today, and sadly also one of the most threatened . It is estimated that fewer than 700 in the wild , mainly in the PN of Lake Nakuru in Kenya and Murchison Falls NP , Uganda. The IUCN lists this subspecies as "endangered " and recognizes that its population is declining . By contrast , in captivity in Europe and thanks to EAF , the population is increasing regularly. In 2008 , the year it opened Bioparc Valencia, Baringo giraffes were 308 zoos EAZA members , a figure that has since been increasing due to new births as those in our park. Today, five years later, there are 400 Baringo giraffes in 96 European zoos , and its population is growing .
