Bird Flu Closures in the US

Lincoln Park Zoo has announced that they have closed McCormick Bird House. All outdoor birds are being moved to indoor or behind-the-scenes spaces. Bird species won't be visible to the public and the bird house will be closed until further notice.

The Kansas City Zoo has announced that they will be pulling birds from exhibit that could have direct contact with wild waterfowl, including their trumpeter swans, red-crowned and grey crowned cranes, flamingoes, and yellow-billed and saddle-billed storks.

From the Tulsa Zoo’s social media platforms:
On your next visit, you may notice some of our birds have been temporarily moved indoors as a precaution against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. It's an important and necessary step to ensure the safety of the animals in our care.

The primary risk to our birds would come from wild birds who land on grounds during migration.

When you see the Protecting Our Flock icon at an exhibit, the birds are inside or relocated for their safety. Some of our birds will be able to remain outside, where their habitats provide protection. In some cases, a building may be closed. At this time, the WildLIFE Trek complex will be closed, with the exception of Life in the Cold. We appreciate your understanding. Your favorite birds will be back as soon as we get the all clear.

Bird flu closes Rainforest Exhibit at Capron Park Zoo in Attleboro

The Sun Chronicle ran an article about the bird flu closure at Capron Park Zoo. Interestingly, the zoo vet is quoted as saying the building will reopen "when the weather becomes hot and dry"- so hopefully sooner rather than later. It also mentions walk-through aviaries closed at other zoos in the area, which is news to me.

If only it was as simple as one man in the comments section said and just make the birds wear masks... . Unfortunately the Capron Park Zoo does not have masked lapwings in its collection.

Milwaukee County Zoo has closed the Mahler Family Aviary and the Taylor Family Humboldt Penguin Exhibit.

Zoo New England (Franklin Park Zoo & Stone Zoo) have put out a statement on Facebook today stating that many of their bird species have been removed from their outdoor exhibits. Franklin Park also said that the aviary in the Children's Zoo, as well as the Aussie Aviary, have been closed to the public.

During your next visit, you may notice some of our birds have been temporarily moved indoors as a precaution against the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus. This is an important and necessary proactive step to ensure the safety of the animals in our care. The primary risk to the birds at the Zoo would come from wild birds that land on Zoo grounds during migration. While some of our birds are able to remain safely outside where their habitats provide protection, some birds have been moved indoors where guests may not be able to see them.

Additionally, the Bird House and Cypress Swamp (Flight Cage) will be closed to guests until further notice, and the Penguin & Puffin Coast will close at 4 p.m. daily so that staff can complete deep cleaning of the habitat. These measures are in place to mitigate common areas of human and animal foot traffic, which has been identified as a way HPAI can spread. We are working collaboratively with the State Veterinarian, United States Department of Agriculture and Missouri Department of Conservation, and we are prepared to take additional steps as needed.

Please rest assure that HPAI does not pose any immediate human health concerns at the Zoo.

We are hopeful to get all the birds back outside and open the Bird House and Cypress Swamp as soon as it is safe to do so. We appreciate your understanding.
I was at the zoo today, the first day of the closure :(. The red-billed blue magpies, cinereous vultures, bald eagle, and barred owl are the only outdoor birds still on display.

For Maryland, it's not just open-topped exhibits. Only the flamingos, ground hornbills, and cranes fit that description. There's two large netted aviaries, each with 10+ species, that have had their animals brought in.

Potter Park moved their Broad-winged hawk off-exhibit, as well as their chickens in the barnyard and their Indian peafowl. The Parakeet Landing is also closed. Other than that, nothing much else as the rest of the birds were on-exhibit both outdoors and indoors.

Great Plains Zoo - all bird species (except for penguins and flamingos) will be off-exhibit, feeders have been removed, and birds will no longer be featured in ambassador programs.
