Birds in your garden

Not a bird but I saw a fox walking down my road last night in front of my house-quite a common occurence now. In a woodland about half a mile from me(still in the suburds of sheffield!) badgers have been spotted quite a few times.

Nice blog there Bubbles-a really nice idea!

Just put some new food out for the birds (peanuts unshelled, apple sliced, wild bird seed, fat balls, mealworms and a home made fat cake (bread, apple, raisens, sunflower seeds, bacon rign and peanuts crushed)on one of the bird stations.
Also put out some sunflowers seeds, fat balls and peanuts on the other feeding station.

On the bottom area of the garden I have put out some sugar puffs for my next door nieghbours badgers (they have a set that runs from the country side under there bottom fence and into the garden (they don't cause any damage to the garden)
and yesterdays chicken frame will be put out later for the foxes. We also have the common Grey Squirrel and some field mice visit the bird stations when the weather is bad.
On thursday we found some fallow deer tracks just over the bottom fence so here's hoping to see real wild fallow deer shortly

Again just to say I will shortly be leaving this great site for a while maybe upto a year or just over so all the best everyone and happy snapping

I live just South of what is technically the suburbs of Norwich; which is almost literally a stone throw away from proper Norfolk countryside. As you can imagine there should be some wonderful birds to be seen. These are the birds I have seen in my garden:

Green Woodpecker, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Sparrowhawk, Eurasian Jay, Pied Magpie, Eurasian Jackdaw, Wood Pigeon (8), Collared Dove (4), Stock Dove, Goldcrest, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Long-tailed Tit (6), Blackbird, Dunnock (30), Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Robin, Song Thrush, Wren, Mistle Thrush, Redwing, Fieldfare, Starling (10) and Chaffinch.

P.S. Species in bold means they breed in my garden, species names in italics means a group or a pair.

We have a fair few visitors in our garden which is in the middle of the sticks. We only feed peanuts and old pieces of bread. I have seen.

Robin, Great tits, Blue tits, Coal tits, Wren, Chaffinch, Dunnock (rarely), Blackbirds, Goldfinch, Yellow hammers, Greater spotted woodpecker, Green woodpecker, Pheasant, French and English Partridge, Barn owl that nests in our barn, Little owl, Tawny owl as there is plenty of rough grassland around, Jay, Crows and plenty of pigeons in the veg. patch.

Also does anyone have fool proof ways of keeping the blasted squirrels out? We currently have our table on a piece of scaffolding pole thats been greased :D

Better to have a squirrel than someones pet pigeons from down the road! i often get very angry and must look like a mad man to my neighbours waving my arms about out the window :D.

Not the birds fault but is annoying feeding someone else's pets!

Using some form of baffle works really well in my experience. ;)

If your table stands alone on top of a post or pole, you could use something like a dustbin lid (or something of similar shape) cut with the pole in the centre placed below the table. The squirrels climb up to it but can't get over it. Combine this with greasing the pole below as well and this puts off all but the most intrepid! :D

Last week I had a maniac magpie who was intent on pecking his way through the window, while on the wing! It continued to do so even as I watched and didn'tfly away until I flapped the curtain.

I've had the same problem with a magpie-lark for a while now. He seems intent on getting at his reflection but all he suceeds in doing is waking me up at 5:30 in the morning and smearing mud and crap all over my bedroom window. I've stuck some cds to the outside of the window and he hasn't been back. I did feel bad for ruining his fun but I was sick of cleaning my windows.
