Birmingham Zoo (Alabama) Birmingham Zoo

That's ambitious!
That'll need to be one big exhibit...

I am certain this "mixed species" exhibit is in fact a new exhibit complex with a series of separate enclosures, including one or more for elephants. If not my sympathy to the RR Hogs and others.....

But seriously it's great that they will take on the challenge of managing a bachelor herd of African elephants, absolutely essential if a sustainable population is to be established in North America

I don't think they will keep elephants together with rhinos, it would never works.

What are the plans for the hippos and for the old pachyderm building ?

The old pachyderm building, will be renovated for quarantine and keeper use. I'm not sure about the hippos, but the zoo keeps them in their future plans.

Fantastic idea, and desperately needed in the U.S., but I'm quite curious as to how the zoo intends to pull it off. Rhinos and bull elephants in harmonious peace?

The article clears it up--this will be another of CLR Design's "rotational" exhibits. The elephants will share habitats with the other species--but by shifting from space to space, not co-existing.
It will look like a series of big elephant paddocks (i.e not a stitch of vegetation, big obvious barriers.
But a worthy experiment nonetheless......

This will be a rotation exhibit, but the zoo will attempt to mix elephants with some of the other species. Keepers I know there, are rather apprehensive about the whole plan...but they are just going to wait and see.
