Chester Zoo Births at Chester...

there has been a recent birth, but im not allowed to say ;D

I happen to understand very well that not everything you hear from zoo staff can be posted in a public board like this one, because I can`t always write everything I know, neither. But then keep it quiet and do the "I know something that you`d like to know but can`t tell you" thing. That`s really bad style. Keep your mouth shut until you`re allowed to tell everyone!

I Guess this is Ema's Calve?

From limited viewing of Ema, the size and shape of the horns suggest this and the other three females (Rosie, Manyara & ?????) are not pregnant that I know of.

Also the background definitely looks like the old house.

Thats good, strange that the story breaks from america and not here haha

If that is Ema, it's great news!!

And I hope I'm not on the keeper hit list of "people who should keep their mouth shut" :o

If you read my post i never mentioned keepers i said senior staff to me that is quite a big difference, and if that makes some people be a bit more care full what they post on the forum then all well and good at least it will stop rumour from becoming fact when in fact it`s total ficition,as i for one come on here to learn about whats going on in the zoo world that i`mnot aware and would like to think what i`m reading is true.End of rant let`s get back to normal service!!!!!!!!!!!

You're dating the girl from the hot dog stand by the warthogs, aren't you?

I'm quite happy reading about rumours if it is clear that that is what they are. If you don't like people making wild guesses then don't post "I know something you don't know" because that just fuels the fire.

Anyway, it's great news about the mixed mountain gorilla/kagu exhibit and the way it incorporates a (conservation-themed) roller-coaster. Oops, I'm not sure if I was authorised to say that :)

Is it a good thing (for conservation) that they have two female calves, or are the keepers so happy that they don't care what it is :p ?

Sorry not guilty on the girl from the hot dog stand, but then again i might be!!!!!

As for posting stuff that is rumour i have no problem with that as long as its stated as such,as for fueling the fires i do know alot of stuff that i cannot post on here but will do so when i can its simply a question of trust i will post news when i can until then people will have to respect that sometimes i cannot correct what they are saying even if i know it complete bollocks.

As for the Mountain Gorilla/Kagu mixed exhibit i think its a great idea second only to them bring in the breedind herd of Vu Quang Ox next year!!!!!!!!!!

My bad (again) about the last calf-I'm probably either misreading stuff again or I've got worse fibrofog that I'm aware of :o

So-from a conservation point of view, is it good that the new one's a female, or doesn't it matter?

Any birth is good for conservation, but females are regarded as more valuable as they can be kept in a compatable herd system whereas males would need to be kept seperate. As both calves are from first time parents, the outcome doesn't really matter, but in future matings, females would be preferable.

but in future matings, females would be preferable.

Generally speaking yes, but in captivity the ratio of young produced isn't necessarily 50/50. In pygmy hippos for example there is a shortage of males. So it needs to be considered within the context of the ratio of male/female calves being produced by Black Rhinos within European collections generally.

So true, an equally balance needs to be struck in sex ratio's according to the species.
