Black-and-Rufous Sengis in NA Zoos

I would guess that Niffler and Newt are somehow related, given that they are uncommon names but both in J. K. Rowling's movie series, Fantastic Beasts.

Excellent news to my ears @Dhole dude. I wasn’t too certain if Brookfield would ever bring back this species at all. But I’m glad that they changed their mind after moving their previous sengi “Newt” to the Bronx Zoo. Also, do you happen to know where “Nya” came from; and where exactly in the zoo can you find her?

I am unfortunately not aware what Nya came from. @MeiLover, who originally reported on this news, may know something about this.

Look forward to seeing the species' return to Brookfield and hopefully in the spring I will make it to Peoria and can report back on their status there.

With the Brookfield Zoo being a major holder of this species once again. Naturally, it just felt right to update the most recent list (11/10/2023), for the general sengi population; and while we’re at it, the former holders list will also be listed here further below:

The following document will be utilized as a record for all births, deaths, locations, and transfers of every black-and-rufous sengi in North America. This thread will also be continuously updated to ensure that the information provided is as accurate as possible. Also feel free to leave any new information in the comments here on this thread.

Each facility will be organized by country, then by the alphabetical name of each institution; with each individual being organized by both sex and age.

Philadelphia Zoo Update:

After getting into a brief rabbit hole through the zoo’s Instagram post regarding the births of Gonzo and Snuffy. I have since managed to confirm the parental origins of the two sengis; and was also able to verify the names of Snuffy’s parents, who were previously unknown to me, until now. I also have plans to update the population list before the year’s end, but unless some unexpected news occur between now and then. I don’t think that we’ll see any further progress within the general population:

1.0? Norbert (unknown) tbd x tbd
0.1? Barrymore (unknown) tbd x tbd

1.0 Gonzo (September 23rd-28th, 2023) Niffler x Drita
1.0 Snuffleupagus/“Snuffy” (September 23rd-28th, 2023) Norbert x Barrymore

USDA documents seem to indicate that Peoria went out of elephant shrews sometime between my visit in 2015 (when I photographed one) and early 2018. They've been missing from every report since then.

Thank you @Coelacanth18 for this sudden yet very helpful information, and now that we somewhat know what happened to Peoria’s elephant shrews. I’ll certainly add them to the updated former holders list later this month.

That saves me the trouble of asking when I hopefully visit next year, but I'll still see if I can ask anyone about their former involvement with the animals.

With the upcoming holidays just around the corner, it only seemed necessary to update both this and the population list beforehand; and after receiving new information from @Coelacanth18 in regards of when the Peoria Zoo might have phased out their elephant shrews. I figured that now was the time to alter the former holders list to reflect this new information:
  • Louisville Zoo - after 2012?
  • Peoria Zoo - circa mid 2010s
  • Smithsonian National Zoo - mid to late 2010s?
  • Denver Zoo - uncertain
  • Staten Island Zoo - circa 2012?
  • Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden - mid to late 2000s?
  • Houston Zoo - after 2012?
  • Cleveland Metroparks Zoo - late 2000s-mid 2010s?
  • Zoo Boise - circa 2014?
  • Yale Peabody Museum - after 2009*

Now in addition to what I have said in the post above. I will also be traveling throughout late December and into the beginning of next year; and because of how busy things will be during the times ahead. I figured that posting each list in advance was the best thing to do before my post-Christmas travels:

While I know that the current population is more or less the same as it was back in December, and that nothing newsworthy hasn’t caused too many changes in any way that I’m aware of. I do want to take the passing time to finally address the long-eluded mystery regarding the information of the sengis that currently call the Henry Doorly Zoo their home.

While I’ve tried several times to gain an answer from past news threads. Naturally, nothing came out of it, and I hope that with some needed assistance from other ZooChatters; I can finally have a good idea on who the subjects are.

While the following isn’t exactly the biggest update that the thread has experienced so far. I do want to give a brief appreciation to @MikeG for their contributions, mostly in regards of the information they provided about the Bronx Zoo’s newest female sengi:

One by one, as reported by @Mary in the respective news thread. It appears that the Bronx Zoo is seeing continued success with baby sengis, with the zoo’s population having grown by one (soon to be two!).

Here is how the current population is listed, as of 12/03/2024.

Philadelphia Zoo Update:

After visiting the zoo for the first time recently; I figured that it was right about time to clarify the numbers for their respective individuals. In the Rare Animal Conservation Center (the zoo’s hub for sengis), there were at least two pairs and two lone individuals between four (possibly five?) enclosures. From my observations, I can confirm that Philadelphia maintains six individuals; or at least, that’s what I assumed until I saw this sign (see below).

At first, it was hard to entail as to if the zoo really did get a seventh sengi, or if it was an individual that moved from one enclosure to another. Either way, this caught my attention and thought this was worth mentioning as the thread’s first update in 2025.

What shares that exhibit with the sengis?
