Black-casqued hornbills

I have recently found out that my local zoo has acquired a male black-casqued hornbill. I'm very excited as I have only ever seen this species in pictures. Has anyone else seen them? Anyone have information about them in captivity?

Hornbill info?

The black casqued hornbill is a very rare hornbill in captivity, and one I missed on my trip to San diego zoo. The zoo keeps a single male in the large Scripps aviary, but they are not free-flight, instead are in large aviary within the scripps.
The largest captive population is at the San Diego Wild animal park, where they keep 2.3. The Park has bred the birds, and I hope that they will be as successful with this species as they have been with their ground hornbills.
In Europe there are 5 zoos keeping them (The dutch parrot centre(1.1) Rarataien zoo Ebbs (I don't know numbers here..), Lourousa bird park (2.2),Zoo de Gaia, Portugal (1.1) and Oasys Parque Del Desierto de Tabernas, Spain, also with 1.1) I don't think that we've bred them here in Europe, but I hope that Walsrode can get there hands on a pair, I'm sure we'll have some success then!

Also Hongkong (0.2), Cincinnati (1.1), Johannesburg (1.2), Umgeni park, Africa (2.2) and leon, Mexico, keep the species.

The much rarer Yellow casqued hornbill is only kept at San Diego and Raratien zoo Ebbs. Only San Diego have hatched an Egg, but I believe it died...

Is that Alright?;)

Can you take some pictures for me? There are so few of this genus of hornbills...

Jo, according to the german Zootierliste this bird is also kept at Birdpark Timmendorfer Strand in Germany, and Vogelpark Turnersee in Austria. According to that site Timmendorfer strand had the world's first breeding succes with this species in 2006.

Also, the park in Ebbs is called "Raritätenzoo" which means "raritieszoo" in german ;)

Thanks Jwer,

I do visit the german site, but I forgot about it when writing just then. The Sand Diego zoo's Website may be referring to their breeding as a U.S first, which seems more likely.

I'm sure that their information about the Yellow Casqued hornbill is correct though.

Sorry about the spelling of Raritatenzoo, I was trying to remember it off the top of my head!

Thanks!

The one that is at the zoo here is a male, from SD, perhaps an offspring. I'm very excited to get to see him on display.

I made a picture of a Ceratogymna elata in 2001 in birdpark Avifauna (alphen a/d rijn, NL). So they used to have the species. (i wasn't digital in 2001 and the scanner is "temporarily out of orde" so i'm not able to post it ;))

I've just uploaded three sets of Hornbill Drawings, I'd like to see what you think of them.

There are no African hornbills though, as I hadn't heard of Black or yellow casqued hornbills in 2006, and they are the only African hornbills I like!

I'm not positive if it's from the park or the zoo, but I have a hunch its from the park. He's not on exhibit yet (and he probably won't be until September or so) but when he is, I'll take pictures of him.

Thanks for all of the info.

I saw the birds this past May in Cincinnati during my trip through Ohio. Very good place to take pictures of the pair in the exhibit if you ever get a chance to go there.

I do. Since I am still new here, I will try to post them up as soon as I know how.

I can confirm the presence of this species at Birdpark Timmendorfer Strand and the pair there is still breeding. On my last visit on 16th May the female was currently immured in the nesting hole.
Apart from Black-casqued hornbills Birdpark Timmendorfer Strand also breeds Blyth's hornbills and Great Indian hornbills.

Paultons Park in the U.K also keeps this species well at least it did last year i think they had 4 birds not sure of the sexes of them though.

How many hornbill species does Paultons park have, i read somewhere they have the largest hornbill collection in Britain.

The only other species i rember seeing are Rhinoceros and Great Indian Hornbills, they used to have the largest collection of Barbets with about 6 species been on show, last time a went they had about 10 species of Laughing Thrush on show.
