Chester Zoo Black rhino at Chester Zoo

I don't think quinto has been placed with a female for some time. He lives in the off show Rhino house with rosie. They are seperated from each other. There is enough space for one more rhino in that house, so why don't they get one of the 3 zurich females and put them there? When I went to Zurich zoo they were just lying down looking useless. Their enclosure would be much bigger at Chester.

Does anyone know which gibbon species Chester intends to get in the new orang house?
 
Sorry, no to both questions asked by grantsmb. I would think Chester Zoo is waiting for instructions from the studbook keeper before they breed more rhinos.

You'd almost certainly be guessing wrong. Port Lympne tend not to act within EEP guidelines for their animals, Howletts and Port Lympne are usually totally independent in their operation. The Black Rhino studbook is more likely maintained by either Berlin or possibly Hanover Zoo.
 
The latest reference to a Black Rhinoceros studbook is 2001, it was then kept by Berlin Zoo.

They have produced a number of calves over the years. I believe that Whipsnade's last female Saya (Quinto's last 'mate' who died resulting in his return to Chester) was obtained from West Berlin. So too was the female Sita now at PAignton and which successfully produced a female calf in March this year.(Father Kingo ex Port Lympne)
 
Does anyone know more about the lion tailed macaques like what is the new male called and where did he come from and how many now in the group ?
 
4.9.2 Lion-tailed Macaques are currently at Chester Zoo. The new male Jimmy is from Fota Wildlife Park.
 
The mandrills at Chester have been in a mixed exhibit most of their lives, with eitjer porcipines or those two female guenons. Sorry, don't know names of any of the monkeys.

So Hornbilly- did you find out any more about the current rhino situation on your 'zooday'. But perhaps you weren't in that part of the zoo if you were feeding Hornbills all day though....

What's the news on the Spectacled Bears. What age is the female and is there any sign of them breeding yet?
 
I don't think any of the rhinos are pregnant, but I didn't ask. Birma is , to my knowledge, pregnant.

The bears have been seen mating, but that was two years ago. The female has bred before.

Forget the black rhinos a moment if there's no news....

What's this about 'Birma' being pregnant? (You kept that quiet). Can you elaborate at all?- its very good news if true...

Spec.Bears- I didn't know the female arrived so long ago. Do you have any details on their History. I know 'Strolch' is about twelve and came from somewhere in Eastern Europe with another male 'velentine'- but I have no details on the female at all.
 
The female Spectacled Bear has bred successfully on the continent, and it was hoped that she would produce a litter this spring. Unfortunately she was not pregnant, but expect some cubs in 2008.

Sometime in late 2006 a lady visitor overheard one of the keepers saying the zoo hoped the female bear would give birth in 2007. She approached him and suggested it would be 2008 as the female needed time to settle into her new home. When asked how she knew this she claimed to have obtained the information from the bear herself. Weird, isn't it, but it looks as though the lady may well be proved right.

I'll see what I can discover about the rhinos, I hope to go to Chester next week.

Since this is the black rhino thread actually ....!

The Chester group is made up along the following breeding combinations:

M Quinto with F Rosie (the difficult one, and perhaps a serious candidate for AI)
M Magadi with F Ema from Dvur Kralove
M Sammy ex Japan with FF Manyara and Kitani

F Ema has yet to be introduced to Magadi, but interactions through the fence are promising. Ema is keen to mate.

M Sammy has been regularly mating the cycling females but no pregnancies have ensued. If he does not succeed within the year, another male will be brought in.

Also rumours are the Krefeld born M will come to Chester later in the year.
