urm pretty appaling really i think the busyest day this year was about 350 people. and i agree i think we can stay clear of the larger mammal stock and still have a very interesting and diverse collection.
red river hogs are meant to be the next mammal coming into the collection
 
350, really. for some reason i thought blackbrook has quite high numbers.

mammal wise, a small cat, some rodents, mini monkeys like mamrosets, some deer, red rive hogs, sloths, wallabies and maybe bats shoud do. oh and otters
 
nope we are very unknown really mammal wise we currently have
munjac deer
6 speices of lemurs
2 species of marmoset
2 species of tamarin
short clawed otter
meerkats
parma wallabies
bennet wallabies
red kangaroos
porcipine
chipmunks
mara
 
small antelope like dik-dik or duiker make a great mixed exhibit my favourite is the african aviary at edinburgh with kirks dik-dik, marabou stork, hammerkop, von der deckens hornbill, violet touraco and lilac breasted roller a fantastic exhibit.

kagu would be unlikely unless that French guy plays nice, but takahe is impossible because none will ever be allowed to a zoo outside NZ (and in NZ there's only a few captive ones in DoC-run facilities)....Imagine if a UK zoo did get them though!! What a coup.
 
jonathon u r quite forgot the crowned crane, have u seen the aviary, fantastic isn't it.
 
Yes, I've only been twice, and that was within six months. I think that having a huge meshed area like that with both mammal and birds is a great concept that other zoos should use. The aviary at edinburgh is especially good because the animals are breeding, well the Von der decken's hornbill anyway. There's a picture of the nesting behaviour on the gallery. The dik diks will attract peple to the area, and the Crowned cranes, Hammerkop, hornbills and others will make them stay. I also like the small tunnel that goes into an off show area( shed or other shelter ). This tunnel method is used at Chester in the Green peafowl aviary. There is a tunnel that leads down to a small shed where the birds can escape the public and the elements.

Blackbrook could try making an aviary like the one at Edinburgh. First they'd need a main animal, Let's say a Brazilian tapir for now. Then they need lot's of other animals that come from the same area as the Brazilian tapir. Maragui storks, Rosybills, Capybara, Jabiru, south american comb duck, other small waterfowl etc. Then they must build the tapir enclosure with a net over it and then introduce the other species one at a time. The result could be a brilliant exhibit, or it could be a flop. The maragui storks have been mixed with the tapirs before at Blackbrook, but they may fall out or there would be compications. It would be a lot of hard wok for the staff at Blackbrook to think of an enclosure/aviary that could be as nice as the one in Edinburgh.

jonathon open question what is your favourite zoo exhibit, i am surprised at how few of these mixed exhibits there are like the aviary at edinburgh, what with space issues in zoos mammals on the floor and birds above it makes common sense, like your idea for blackbrook.
 
There are quite a few aviaries like the one at Edinburgh that I know of. Not on as big a scale, but Zurich zoo has Agoutis, Grey winged trumpeter and mot mots housed together, and they have Sloth and Spangled Cothinga. they also Have the Huge Masola exhibit, but that is not an aviary as such, it's more of a biome building, but It still has an array of species, geckos, Lemurs, Madagascar crested Ibis, and like in the wild, you are not cerainly going to see some of the more elusive species like the Lemurs.

Chester also has the Mythical macaws aviary which has Azara's agouti, Red tailed amazon and Blue throated macaw. Chester also tends to put a ground dwelling species like a pheasant in an aviary with a small paseerine, turaco or pigeon.

My favourite exhibit....hmmm....... Well there is the Islands in Danger at Chester. It's brilliant. One of the Juvnile BoPs will come up to me and let me stroke his fet while he chirps away at Me. I also like the Komodo dragon enclosures. Have you noticed the Java sparrows in the original one? There are also Visayan Taricitc hornbills, which were courting when I last visited and lots of pigeons. There used to be white collared kingfisher, Palawan peacock pheasant and stella's lorikeet in here, but the kingfishers werent getting on so some are being moved to other zoos while some are staying in the zoo in the aviaries near islands in Danger. The Stella's lorikeets died out, and I don't kno what happened to the Palawan Peacock Pheasants.

But then i love The tropical realm, Realm of the red Ape and the Elephants of the asian forest. But these are all houses, is that OK, or do you want just one Exhibit?
 
i think we are getting off subject here should start a thread on your favourite single exhibit one only.
 
yes. I really hope That Balckbrook does get an aviary like that. The walk-in aviary, I have to say is not that good, but this is only because of the species in it. Little egrets and Meller ducks aren't that special.
 
i think paignton was the last zoo in britain to have goliath heron, does anyone know where and when the last shoebill was in britain.
 
the only zoos i know that had them were edinburgh before the war and london
