Had a really enjoyable afternoon at Blackbrook at Saturday. Lots of building work started - African area, pelican enclosures, ibis aviary, icelandic enclosure, Red River Hog enclosure and of course the penguin pool. Animal highlights were the Buff-necked Ibis and Australian Sarus Cranes, neither of which I have seen elsewhere.

bloodycurtus (sorry, didn't catch your real name) was kind enough to stop for a chat and answered our many questions.

I will certainly be returning before too long to catch up on the developments (and to see those openbills of course!).

Will be there tomorrow, so will watch out for vans full of Openbills! Very nice birds.

(Hi Rob!)

Ben

Will they be on show straight away, or in quarantine?

I'll be along to film them and photograph them later this year or for my birthday next year.

so you liked it then?

Very much. Not been for a while as I've been living in darkest North Wales so was nice to see so many changes. In addition to what Rob mentions above, it was my first time seeing the Purple Sandpipers. Very much looking forward to seeing how that Icelandic enclosure pans out.

Can I ask what the young ibis in with the Buff-necked are? They looked Waldrapp-ish but in the light I wasn't sure.

they where waldrapp but these where moved later in the day that is where the open billed are going to be housed over winter

So have the Buff-necked and Waldrapp gone off-show for the time being then? If so looks like I timed it well!

Was at Walsrode not so long ago so seen Asian Openbills recently but never seen the Buff-necked Ibis before.

I took around 400 photos at Walsrode (ah, the wonders of digital!).

Will see if I can get some on the web somewhere.
