Hello ZooChat

I am just introducing myself as a new member whose been following this site for about a month now. I am a "charter member" (40+ years) of GLAZA: The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association. On February 6, my wife and I were invited to a special charter members only breakfast at the LA zoo: right in front of the African Wild Dog exhibit. We were amongst the youngest guests there, being that I joined as a teenager. I was also invited because I was probably amongst the first African-American members of GLAZA along with my younger brother, so I've been supporting this zoo for many years and have a lot of fond memories. I also remember well the old Griffith Park Zoo that closed in 1965, before the opening of our current zoo in 1966. The LA Zoo has been a large part of my life for as long as I can remember.

In 1985 I trained in the zoo keepers class, and though I didn't get hired
(there were only 6 or 7 openings out of a class of 100), I will always cherish the experience dearly. After all, I was previledged to work with such diverse species as elephants, snow leopards, polar bears, kangaroos, koalas, spectacled bears, penguins, pelicans, mountain tapirs, hartmann's mountain zebra, desert bighorn sheep, maned wolf, and in the bird breeding colony.

I also have enjoyed visiting several zoos and aquariums throughout the country, to the best of my recollection they include:

Zoos

California:
Lion Country Safari (Laguna Niguel) CLOSED
Los Angeles
Santa Ana
Santa Barbara
San Diego
San Diego Wild Animal Park (Escondido)
San Francisco

Florida:
Disney's Animal Kingdom (Orlando)

Hawaii:
Honolulu

Missouri:
St. Louis

Nevada:
Las Vegas

Washington:
Woodland Park (Seattle)

Aquariums

British Columbia, Canada:
Vancouver Aquarium

California:
Aquarium of the Pacific (Long Beach)
Cabrillo Aquarium (San Pedro)
Marineland of the Pacific (Palos Verdes) CLOSED
Sea World (San Diego)
Steinhart Aquarium (San Francisco)

Hawaii:
Honolulu Aquarium
Maui

And with that, fellow zoo lovers and conservationists I salute you!

Welcome to Zoochat, Blackduiker. It seems, you maybe have a special interest in duikers, so as like I do....
You've worked with so many intersting animals, as like as the mountain tapirs. I had the oppurtunitiy, to vist them in their exhibit during my visit in 2002, so phantastic animals.

In 2005, i've visted the L.A Zoo again, I was glad to see "Andalas", the sumatran rhino at L.A, before he was send back to Indonesia.

Can you tell me more about the mysterious blood desease of the black duikers, which have only the blacks and no other duiker species ?

Thank you !
