Does anyone know what's going on with the Orangs? We came twice last year and missed them both times! Hoping to get to Blackpool again in the foreseeable future but if they orangs aren't back we will head to chester!

Last update was that the house was expected to be completed and the Orangs moved back in by the end of May..

I saw the pair of Scaley-sided mergansers today in the Wader aviary near the Small Primates/Anteaters. A couple more Patagonian Mara have arrived, bringing the number up to five. The Gray Mouse Lemur enclosure has been revamped and thus allowing you to see them better, I saw one very early this morning. Red eyed-tree Frogs are now back on-show in the Elephant/Reptile house and a Reticulated Python has moved in with the Common Boas.

The North American tree Porcupines are off-show atm due to the recent bad weather however, they are due to return shortly. Three King Colobus' were born in December and a Red Titi (In the Small Primate house) was born in September. Work is progressing well on the Orangutan house and is set for completion in May. A new house is being built next to the Red River Hogs, I'm unsure what it is set to hold.

To end with all that, the Amur Tigeress was in season and lots of mating occurred.

Looking forward to visiting again this year - i'm waiting for the orangs to return. Glad to hear that work seems to be progressing well.

Also, good to hear about the tiger's mating. Has Blackpool had tiger cubs before? I used to visit the zoo every year when i was little and can't remember seeing any cubs but i probably didn't pay specific attention when i was younger haha.

Yes, 1.2 born in 1996 to Sheya and Jagasar, the previous pair.

I'll be at BZ tomorrow (drove down from Inverness today). What's their bird collection like? Their website indicates quite a good collection but websites aren't always accurate.

There are quite a few additions to the bird collection recently.
Lady Ross turaco, Omei Shan liocichla and collared finchbills down at the old semi nocturnal house. The scaly-sided mergansers and a whole host of other waterfowl on display.
The cracid collection includes a few species - helmeted curassow, black curassow, blue-throated piping-guan and Chaco chachalaca.
And then the only Magellanic penguins in the UK too.

I am looking to make contact with anyone working at Blackpool Zoo - please PM me.

Many Thanks in advance,

Blackpool is the only UK zoo that is really successful with this species. Do you know how many they have now?

As of today, I counted eleven - however, I'm not sure if that's the correct number.

A pair of Ducorps cockatoo are now on-show near the Small primate house, they're currently mixed with Ground Cuscus and Long-nosed Potoroo.

A new exhibit is close to being finished, it will house Stanley Cranes. The Orangutan exhibit is looking good too.

The flamingo sculpture near the old entrance/education centre has been removed.

Active Oceans is due to re-open tomorrow after some development work - a pair of sea lions were moved to the Tapir pool whilst this took place.

Silvery Marmosets have now moved to the semi-nocturnal house and have been replaced by Geoffreys Marmoset in the Agouti enclosure, near the Sealions.

A pair of Lady Ross's Turaco are also now on-show in the semi-nocturnal house.

A quick snippet of news from a visit yesterday, a male Kea arrived two weeks ago from Paradise Park. 1.2 Western Sitatunga have arrived back and now occupy their old enclosure near the Red River Hogs - who have also had an extension to their enclosure. A single Stanley's Crane has now taken up residence in the former Zebu enclosure.

with orangutan house nearing competition late july their coming bk is a new date there aiming for. Apart from decorating the concrete pipes I don't think they've done anything to the outside area, plenty of space in that area to expand it. Gorrila house was closed today aswell thankfully they where all on the island

0.0.4 Iberian Wolf pups born in a first breeding for Blackpool. The litter is now 4 weeks old and have just gone on show
