Any birth is a risk, and it’s interesting that Blackpool have chosen to announce the news in the manner that they have. Usually elephant pregnancies are kept quiet until the very last moment. Clearly they’re as confidant as they can be at this stage.

Confirmation this morning of both Noorjahan and Esha's the elephant's pregnancy on ITV's This Morning.
So I spoken to the Section Manager at Blackpool Zoo about the elephant pregnancies and yes it is very great news for the herd but still got a long way to go and fingers crossed there'll soon to be pitter patter of not so little feet at the end of the year

I don‘t think it‘s generally true that zoos keep elephant pregnancies quiet until the last moment. Whipsnade and Chester do not announce pregnancies but almost all other zoos in Europe do announce them sooner or later. And since stillbirths or calves that die after a few days are made public by virtually ALL zoos, I see no reason not to announce a pregnancy. The public will find out anyway - elephant births are simple ‚too big‘ to hide.

Sadly In October 2023 one of the older females Emma died. Unfortunately I can’t quite remember why but was likely due to her older age.

thanks for confirming. assumed that to be the case as all 3 were present on our last visit in September. as an aside it was lovely to see Khari looking so well

It would be nice if this enclosure is one of many to come with the return of their herp and inverts the collection once held.
Oh definitely. I was only young the last time I visited their original reptile house so I don't remember much of it, but it's great that they're putting some of their reptiles back on show.
I saw a recent photo in Blackpool's gallery on here showing the caiman enclosure being re-done, for those who visit regularly is the caiman still off-show at the moment?

Caiman were off-show at the time of visit, don’t think they’re back yet. Will be back at the zoo in the next week so can confirm for sure. Nice to see the boa on-show, think the zoo is really missing having their reptiles on-show so any new addition is certainly welcomed.

Lilac-breasted roller is now mixed with the lovebirds and Inca tern signage suggests they're now mixed with the Magellanic penguins.

Also on April 20th, the zoo announced they moved (0.0.5) Inca terns (3 adults 2 juveniles) on display in the Magellanic penguin exhibit.

On April 21st, it was mentioned that the zoo transferred a (0.1) coppery titi monkey to the Marwell Zoo in Hampshire in February*.

On May 2nd, it was announced that the zoo transferred a (1.0) common ostrich to the Blair Drummond Safari & Adventure Park in Scotland.

Sorry for going off topic but ZTL lists Southern ostrich Struthio camelus australis as a former holding, last listed as being seen in 2018. Did they actually have this subspecies as they would have been the only ones in the UK?
