Please note the following discusses pregnancy loss.

You may remember that earlier this year we announced that two of our elephants, Noorjahan and Esha, were pregnant. We have some very sad news to share with you about these eagerly anticipated pregnancies.

Both females were due to give birth this autumn and were being monitored carefully throughout their gestation by our dedicated keepers and the wider elephant care team.

Sadly, Noorjahan’s calf did not develop fully and passed away in the womb. She went into labour and passed the calf naturally, in late September. All signs exhibited prior to this event had been encouraging but, as with any pregnancy, we knew there were many inherent risks that could lead to complications during gestation and delivery.

In the early hours of the 4th November, Esha gave birth to a calf surrounded by the herd, having gone full term and initial signs were positive. However, it soon became apparent that the rearing of a newborn was becoming challenging for Esha and, despite guidance from her mother Noorjahan, she would not enable the calf to suckle. At this time a round-the-clock care schedule was established by our team.

As part of the preparations for the births, Esha had been trained by our elephant care team to allow her milk to be expressed should it be required and Noorjahan trained for blood donation; which the plasma extracted can be used in various circumstances, as it contains vital antibodies to support the immune system.

Newborns usually receive their first feed within 6 – 12 hours - this contains colostrum to strengthen their immune system in the early stages of life. The team worked extremely hard to obtain enough feed for the calf from Esha. The next challenge was safely feeding the calf without compromising the herd and the bond they had developed. The herd were rightly protective of the calf and it took over 24 hours for Noorjahan to realise what the care team were trying to do, and allow them to feed the calf.

As the care team’s perseverance paid off, they were able to give the newborn a substitute feed which contained the plasma from Noorjahan and the calf responded well. Despite these immense efforts, on Wednesday evening the calf started to develop seizures and continued to deteriorate, until sadly passing away on Thursday 7th November, surrounded by the herd and the elephant care team. The postmortem confirmed that the calf had developed an infection after missing the vital nutrients and vitamins that were needed from the colostrum in those early hours of life.

Adam Kenyon, Elephant Section Head said – “As elephants are extremely intelligent animals and will mourn the loss, we are continuing to monitor them all closely.

The relationships developed between our elephant care team and the elephants themselves are truly extraordinary; without this level of dedication and commitment, we would not be able to provide the optimal levels of care we strive for at Blackpool Zoo.

We are immensely grateful to the team, knowing that we did everything possible to try to save the calf, and wish to thank them for their huge efforts – we hope that everyone will respect our team during this difficult time.

Despite the sadness we all feel at present, the natural and complex behaviours of the individual elephants, observed throughout these devastating events, have shown that there is a bright future ahead for the herd and we will continue to support both their needs and the future of this incredible species.”

Absolutely heartbreaking for the team, did Esha ever witness a birth at Twycross?

Hopefully better results for the future but a shout out to the amazing keepers & vet team for doing everything possible

Sad news for the herd but maybe Blackpool
Should learn not to announce pregnancy news till
It actually happens!! Whipsnade have learnt this and so they don’t say anything till they have a successful birth and healthy mother baby bond! their still hope as Donna at whipsnade lost her first baby and now has her daughter Nang Phai so always chance again in future

Sad news hopefully they can try again. Put my summer trip of to December January not sure now. Although only brief may be the first time time kate has seen a newborn before she was moved to blackpool.

I disagree. Why is it any better not to announce the pregnancy but only the loss of the calf? I do expect zoos to be as open and transparent as possible and that includes sharing news regarding elephants - who are a flagship species and also hugely important as individuals to many visitors.

No, as she was the last one born there, so she has no experience of babies or any elephant younger than herself. That may have created this problem. It seems Noorjahan was fulfilling her own role but I wonder if her own failed pregnancy was connected to the length of time since her last one- Esha.

Its certainly very bad news for Blackpool.

Think that is bit too harsh tbh! While I prefer Chester & Whipsnade's approach in not announcing elephant pregnancies(maybe Blackpool will take this approach in future?) we have to remember that this was the first EVER elephant pregnancies here so they were bound to be excited in announcing.

Fact remains it's a horrific loss to the keepers, vets, & all involved in the captive Asian elephants programme.

We should be supporting Blackpool at this time not finger pointing what they could/should have done.

I was a little surprised that they announced the pregnancies when they did, as it heightens expectations and makes a sad outcome like this even more bitter. I guess even if they hadn't, they would have had to make some announcement, at least about the loss of Esha's calf, as the news would inevitably leak out at some stage. I do feel very sad for them all obviously..

Let’s also not forget both cows are still alive. The outcome could have been far worse

I’m devastated, I’ve been following their journey since it was first announced in March. I’m glad both the girls are doing well, hopefully after they recover, they will one day get the chance to become mums again. Honestly this sorta explains Noorjahans behaviour when I last visited on the 16/11/24 she would have been mourning both babies..

Now probably is the wrong time to ask, but does anyone know if Tara (26) and Minbu (39) are likely to reproduce again? neither of them have produced a calf in a long long time. Tara had a stillborn calf in 2012 and Minbus only calf was 26 years ago (Karishma at Whipsnade) but surely both could still be fertile? I’m aware Kate (55) is a non breeding cow.

Minbu likely not, she’s almost 40 and the gap between her last calf is far too long by now, I’d say Tara still has a chance but as the years go on that chance is decreasing.

I don’t see them focusing on Minbu as her calf Karishma has has a male and female calf herself, and although (Karishma) can’t breed anymore it’s still a contribution to the elephant population

Sorry if i’ve read this wrong, are you saying Karishma at Whipsnade is unable to breed anymore?

Really sad news, was looking forward to seeing calves at Blackpool. Hopefully there will be better fortune next time... They have a great elephant facility, the potential is there.

Extremely devastating news to hear.

I know how excited the team was for these two births; obviously the first in a decade, so my thoughts are with them.

It's difficult to associate Noorjahan's failed pregnancy with the time since her last, but it is possible. Fingers crossed, she'll be given another opportunity to breed again. Her body may respond better a second time around. On a positive note, she is only 29, so she still has time if they wish to breed from her again.

On Esha, it's really tragic overall, but not surprising given she's never witnessed a birth of her own. Obviously the plan would've been for Noorjahan to give birth first, so Esha can learn and witness the birth and raising for a little bit before she birthed her own calf. There's no saying whether it would've resulted in a change in her behavior, but it's highly possible. Perhaps that's even more reason to attempt to breed from Noorjahan again, as it's vital Esha has the experience of witnessing a calf being raised before she has her own.

On Tara and Minbu, both females are likely non breeding. Minbu is 40 and last gave birth more than 25 years ago so she is absolutely non breeding now. Tara last gave birth 12 years ago now, and it was also a stillborn calf. The fact she hasn't conceived now too with Emmett supports the notion that she is non breeding now too. Effectively the future of Blackpool's herd now relies on Noorjahan and Esha.

The male elephant at Blackpool, conceived with Karishma before he left whiosnade but like noorjahan the fetus failed to develop and died but Karishma has retained it ever since 2020 so she is currently non breeding but is only 26! So I don’t know what they will do going forward x
