Blackpool Zoo Blackpool Zoo News 2025

The two young female gorillas have officially left the zoo - they have moved to Sri Chamarajendra Zoo in India this week. This leaves Blackpool with 2,2, adult trio and sub-adult male born in 2017.
Bit of a coincidence, in a short BBC news item, Meisie, the first gorilla born at. Blackpool, along with her sibling Moanda, have moved from Frankfurt Zoo to Mysuru Zoo in India.

Seems like scrambled information?. M& M went directly from Blackpool to Mysore which is/must be one and the same as the longer name given. The male they will live with (Quembo) did come from Frankfurt but he moved to Mysore a while back. Mysore being the only Indian zoo with gorillas (now3.2.)

Thanks, that's cleared that up

Were there/are there any updates surrounding the antelope house? Can’t remember seeing anything come of it but thought I’d check incase I’m mistaken

The antelope house?

Two Jamaican boas have been put on display in the tank on the top floor of Orangutan Outlook, which previously housed sailfin lizards. One of the boas looks like it has bad stuck shed, which some of the comments on the Facebook post have pointed out, I hope that's been dealt with quickly.

Interesting discovery, During an elephant talk this morning, it was revealed that Noorjahan is the current matriarch.
Interesting to hear - even though Noorjahan is the biggest of the girls, she's always been behind Minbu (the former matriarch) and even Kate in the hierarchy. However, with her daughter now reaching adulthood, it seems she's had a boost within the group and Minbu's been content to let Noorjahan step up, so to speak.

It's worth noting Minbu had been the matriarch for a long period - dating back to the group's Twycross days.

I have also forgotten to mention that a couple months back, Shortly after the loss of the expectant babies, Noorjahan was acting quite unusual with Minbu such as pushing and chasing her. This was something I hadn’t seen from Noorjahan before. Perhaps the loss of the babies triggered Noorjahan to want to become more dominant.

This is the current view of it taken today - it is looking good, though I’m intrigued to see whether it’ll just house sitatunga which are housed nearby, or the zoo plan on acquiring different hoofstock.

A few other notes -

Quite a lot of demolition work ongoing at the moment - the old agouti/tamarin outdoor enclosure has been squashed and new framework is up to replace that.

African barn owl enclosure is now empty, no indication whether these birds are off-show or have left the collection/died.

Small primate exhibit near the entrance - opposite the main cafe has also been demolished.

Prevosts’ squirrel are no longer housed in the collection and their enclosure has been demolished.

A few reindeer offspring have been born.
