Blair Drummond Safari & Adventure Park Blair Drummond Safari Park News

I believe she came from World of Wings Bird of Prey Centre and is called Gandalf!

Now sourced from facebook:

"Exciting News; it's love at first bite: A collaboration between ourselves and World Of Wings Birds Of Prey Centre has resulted in Alex, our 17 year old male Rüppells Griffon Vulture, being joined by a 12 year old female called Gandalf. She is on breeding loan from World Of Wings Birds Of Prey Centre. It has been a life-long ambition of Neil Davis (Head of Birds at Blair Drummond) to establish a vulture breeding programme. We think this is a first in Scotland for the Rüppells Griffon Vulture."

Sure not an easy pick as a socially apt older female must be added. All the same there are plenty of older - post-repro - elephants in Europe that might be taken into consideration.

The Amur tigers are getting an expanded pond in their enclosure and the out door sea-lion pool is to be expanded too.

Be interesting what future plans are in store for the safari park. And I do not mean what they announced just now.

I have a feeling it could be so much more ...

Blair Drummond makes adjustments for oldest chimp:

Blossom, our oldest chimp at approximately 61, is the leader of the group and has lived here since the late 1970's. Her son, Chippy, can often be seen causing mischief and making a noise, but we all know that Mum is actually the boss!

As Blossom gets older Chimp Keepers adjust their care accordingly – it can be quite an effort for her to keep up to speed with the younger, more able chimpanzees.

Park blacksmith Jimmy stepped in this winter to build a fantastic new ladder for the bridge that leads from the indoor chimp house on to chimp island. This has made Blossoms life a lot easier, and she has used it daily since it’s been installed.

Not sure if anyone picked up on this but Bela the Amur Tiger died on the 27th of December, a sad month for Scotland's female tigers apparently! Does anyone know if this leaves the park with any tigers at all?

I believe Bela was the last tiger at Blair Drummond, as Genghis passed away at the start of summer this year.

They had only in the last few years done a lot of work on the Tiger exhibit. I would imagine they will look to get a new Tiger, perhaps Sumatran ? They had Bears before, but can't see them going back down that route. I got some nice photos of Bela in the summer, not long after the male had died. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the Lion Cubs from last year are weaned away from their parents and placed in the exhibit before they are moved to new collections.

I believe the Elephant at Blair Drummond is also elderly ? and the last in it's collection. I wonder if Blair Drummond are likely to look into the species they hold as the Tigers and Elephants were the main attractions of the foot Safari, so with one exhibit now empty and another down to it's final animal who is aging, the foot safari will have lost some of it's appeal.
