Blank Park Zoo on Instagram: "Welcome to the world, little cygnets Miso and Tofu the trumpeter swans are proud parents to two cygnets! The puffy pair had their neonatal exams on June 3, and both are healthy and growing quickly. Blood results confirmed that both cygnets are girls. One cygnet has a yellow band on her right leg, and her zookeeper team has named her 'Kelp." The other has a pink band on the left, and her name is 'Ramen.' Miso and Tofu have done an excellent job these past few weeks, as first time parents, and we're excited to watch them grow. Trumpeter swan populations were nearly decimated in the late 1800s, and it was only through aggressive conservation efforts in the early 2000s that North America’s largest waterfowl species was pulled from the brink of extinction. Blank Park Zoo is proud to participate in the Trumpeter Swan Restoration Program, and we have hatched and released 36 trumpeter swans back into the wild to date. In all seriousness, I think an exhibit like Wild Iowa is so important as the state has been so ravaged by agriculture, and showcasing what Iowa once was/could be is important for protecting what we have left, even if the only animals on display are otters and bobcats.

Including the new bull, they have 1.2 Eastern Black Rhinos, the new bull AJ, and a pair of females, Ayana and her daughter Kamara born April 8th, 2019. As mentioned earlier on this page, Ayana's other daughter Tumani left last month, and Kiano, the sire of both Tumani and Kamara, moved to a zoo in Texas in November 2022.
