Including the new bull, they have 1.2 Eastern Black Rhinos, the new bull AJ, and a pair of females, Ayana and her daughter Kamara born April 8th, 2019. As mentioned earlier on this page, Ayana's other daughter Tumani left last month, and Kiano, the sire of both Tumani and Kamara, moved to a zoo in Texas in November 2022.
A.J. for all intense purposes will not be a realistic candidate for a breeding bull. At 4 years of age he is simply way too young to be an acceptable mate for a mature seasoned cow and even her daughter is out of his league...alltogether. I do hope the AZA SSP takes note of this....

He's almost five, but yes it will be quite a while before he'll be mature enough to breed both cows. Perhaps he stands a better chance breeding Kamara initially in the coming years, as she's essentially his age; but he'll certainly need the time for the mature cow, Ayana.

On March 19th, the zoo announced that a red-capped cardinal hatched, which is on display in the Discovery Center.

On April 2nd, the zoo announced they transferred a (1.0) four-toed hedgehog to Buttonwood Park Zoo in Massachusetts.

On May 7th, the zoo announced they acquired a (1.0) Bactrian camel named Scooter from Lincoln Park Zoo in Illinois, which is on exhibit.

Construction for the Zoo’s “Expand the Impact” campaign (“Wild Iowa” complex, new lion habitat, and upgraded tiger and pinniped spaces) will begin by the end of the year, with completion set for late 2025 or early 2026.

According to this recent article, the zoo is planning to break ground on construction for the Wild Iowa part of the campaign this Thursday (November 6th).

I should also mention that this groundbreaking ceremony will be used to kick off and celebrate the zoo’s 60th anniversary!

On August 7th, it was announced that the zoo helped headstart and release 56 Blanding's turtles back into the wilds of Iowa.
