Marwell Wildlife Blast from the past spieces

yes i know, i couldnt think of a intelligent answer!
Sorry was in a very strange mood when i posted that comment, any way the most complete remains of a Dodo was found when they built the new run way on the island, strange when you think the Dodo cannot fly.

Not much to do with Marwell's past,I know, but where are these remains now? I always thought the only Dodo remains were a beak and a foot in the Oxford museum..

Sorry Tigerlemurguy, I never noticed it.

its okay! youre forgiven

I believe the remains are kept in the Mauritius National Muesum, sorry for taking a major detour off the topic but i couldn`t resist it!!!!

its an interesting subject and i think we are finished with marwell anyway

The beak and foot at Oxford are the only remnants from a live dodo that was kept in England for a while (the skin was thrown out a hundred years ago because it was in poor condition). Many sub-fossil bones (hundreds to thousands of years old) have been found in Mauritius, and samples are on view in several museums around the world.

was a good read, its a shame that they no longer have kulan and onager

why did they leave and where did they go?

ive rean marwell the story so far and would like to know some more about maned wolves, bush dogs and blue duiker (are they still in the collection?(off show))

Would you say marwell was better then?

The first maned wolves arrived about 1982, but died soon after arriving. But funding was made and a second pair obtained, and these went on to become one of the most successful breeding pairs in the UK. Maned Wolves were kept in the enclosure that's now Marabou Mansions, and left the zoo in 1998.
The Bush Dogs arrived in the mid-90's, and two groups were kept in the former Maned Wolf enclosure and Short-Clawed Otter enclosure (now the Ocelot's) after these animals left. These animals bred once or twice in their time at the park.
The Blue Duikers were kept completely off-show in order to recieve the best breeding results.

Why would that make any difference?

What is now Marabou Mansions originally held hunting dogs while the Maned Wolves were in the dell that now holds Cheetahs. The latter later moved to the former enclosure.

The Bush Dogs never bred at the park.

are the blue duikers still at the park?, why did the Maned Wolves and bush Dogs Leave?

Actually I one of the volunteers told me about a time when he saw recentley bush dog cubs emerge from the den. Probably didn't last long though. And when the maned wolves moved into the hunting dog pen, the hunting dogs moved to an enclosure on South Road that is now the takin paddock.

There are no more blue duikers. Probably like most departures, breeding logistics, developments, deaths, etc.

I don't recall the Hunting Dogs ever going into an enclosure on South Road. The site of the Takin Paddock was always a hoofstock pen (Okapi, Anoa, Malayan Tapir to name a few species it held) and the adjacent Lynx cages.

I learn't that the hunting dogs were kept on that site by ERIBECA39, a member on this site who is a keeper at Marwell. They moved out when the first okapi arrived.

I said just that in an earlier post. Read more carefully.
