Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp News 2012

Camels and onagers: supposedly to be mixed (again). Big exhibit Asian House indeed Komodos. Rusty spotted cats left collection allthogether. The Himalayan rock area (takin, macaque et al) is decrepit, animals moved out. No white-lipped deer anymore, takin to Warsawa Zoo. Pygmy hippo left the collection (Zoo Pilzen) to make way for black rhinos and okapi.

Riviera Hall to be emptied out (climate not cost effective). If not within new locations within zoo all of the animal collection surplused and out of the collection alltogether.

What is to become of the Riviera hall, one of the most iconic zoo buildings in Europe?

Do you know where the rusty spotted cats went too? Also if the okapi move what will replace them?

Will they be having multiple Komodo accommodation or will this lead to the total removal of the species completely from the hall?

No, but I can check where rusty spotteds were transferred out to.
Okapi to be replaced in that part by Asiatic lions ...

Removal of Komodos from the Hall entirely. As said before the hall will no longer be for exhibition of wild animals (safe for perhaps some of the birds in the Bird House part .., but that I am not even completely sure of). No renovation as previously planned due to lack of finance, lack of funding and complete and pre-planned (by Council) evaporation of public council subventions. Bordering on the criminal and despite large scale public protests at government and municipal cuts in spending.

Thanks KB! Another question :) are brown bear still to replace the lions?

According to the dutch wikipedia these are some of the future plans:

- orang-utan enclosure (2012-2018)
- Completion Africa with a Madagascar-area (after 2010)
- realisation Australia (I've heard rumors about a koala island but personaly didn't take these really serious) (2012-2018)
- Amazonica (start 2012, finished 2013)
- Renovation Asia (2011-2012)
- New Komodo enclosure (late 2012)
- Implementation jubilee projects in 3 phases:
- renovation pachyderm area - Black Rhino / new okapi enclosure (2012-2013)
- adjust okapi enclosure into a new lion enclosure (end 2013-2014)
- renovate predator enclosure for a large group of primates (Barbary Macaque) (2015-2016)
- New meerkat enclosure (2012-2013)

So I don't know if they still are planning to keep bears anywere?
I thought they were planning on a new hippo enclosure as well?

New births include an Onager on 27th May and the Greater Spot Nosed Monkey have also had a baby (first breeding for Rotterdam on the latter)

Bliijdorp have announced via their Facebook today that Indian Rhino, Namaste is pregnant and due to give birth in Autumn 2012

The female black and rufous elephant shrew (Gloria), has found a partner. As the Rotterdam Zoo couldn't find a mate for her in Europe, they found a male (Gambit), after searching for a year, in Denver. The two are doing fine together, Gloria even made a nest allready.

This is really exciting news! Fingers crossed for babies! :)

Does anybody know which animals inhabit the exhibit, where Sea Otters was exhibited earlier in the Oceanium? Thanks in advance!

I seem to remember their exhibit being empty when I visited earlier this year but that was a good 6 or more months ago. Someone who has visited more recently will be more helpful.

In May it had a very large number of trout in it - nothing else.

Zoo goes bananas over cocaine seizure - Yahoo! New Zealand News
13 October 2012

A major cocaine seizure in Europe has turned out to be good news for the animals at Rotterdam's zoo.

The drugs were hidden among boxes of bananas, and the fruit went to the monkeys and other creatures at the Blijdorp zoo.

Dutch prosecutors on Friday said more than eight tons of cocaine was hidden among the bananas on a ship from Ecuador.

The drugs were seized on Monday in the Belgian port of Antwerp, while the bananas were allowed to continue on to Rotterdam - the shipment's final destination.

Dutch police arrested a Belgian truck driver and four Dutch men on Tuesday.
Dutch authorities say the seizure is the biggest ever in the Netherlands or Belgium.
