Sad news from Blijdorp: polar bear Eric died yesterday at the age of 21.
Kidney failure. Diagnosed first 2 years ago and in treatment and antibiotics. A week or so, everything went for the worse.
Luckily he has left the recently born twins which are doing fine !
Last year Rotterdam Zoo obtained 4 Common guitarfishes from France and these are now placed on public view in the large Shark-aquarium.
Last week a Prince Alfreddeer was born .

Okapis are returning to Rotterdam soon ! On March 6 the male Ngwani will come from Antwerp to Rotterdam .

Hakuna, the world oldest ( slender-snouted ) Crocodile in captivity had died

More on Hakuna : he came ( together with the female Matata ) around 1930 as an adult to the old Rotterdam Zoo and both animals were moved to the new Rotterdam Zoo ( Blijdorp ) in 1940.They were a gift fom the famous Josephine Baker. RIP Hakuna.

The year has just started...but I hope so, too!
2 Giraffes born at Rotterdam Zoo : Last Wednesday Anne gave birth to a boy and 2 days later Ziba gave birth ( sex of the calf unknown to me ).
Next monday Zwatra, the almost adult Greater indian rhino will leave Rotterdam Zoo and find a new home in the zoo of Branféré ( France ).
Yesterday an American bison was born in the outdoor-enclosure so many visitors were able to see the birth .
