Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp News 2018

Some notes, news and observations from my visit yesterday ( April 21 2018 ) :
- Gelada-enclosure looked almost finished but the animals were still not in it ( see photo : Gelada-enclosure - still not in use | ZooChat )
- Part of the Oceanium closed due to construction-work for the Conservation-area they are building ( so no rock squirrels, colorado toads, kit fox-indoors, burrowing owls and so on - see photo : Construction-site Oceanium | ZooChat )
- White-naped mangabeys moved from their "ugly" enclosure next to the Gorillas to the enclosure which formely was home to the Guerezas ( see photo : Enclosure White-naped mangabey | ZooChat )
- The Guerezas moved from their old enclosure to the former Putty-nosed monkey-enclosure next to the Gorilla -island.
- One of the male-gorillas ( forgot to note its name :( ) was seperated from the group and housed in the former "ugly" mangabey-enclosure. Reason : he became adult and will be send to another zoo to become the breeding-male there ( don't know which zoo )
- The enclosure for the Eurasian otters housed a pair of Golden eyes but I didn't see the otters ( death, moved to another zoo, behind the scenes ? )
- Saw some of the latest breeding-results :
Guereza ( see Guereza-baby | ZooChat )
Black rhinoceros ( see Black rhino-calf | ZooChat )

That is Nasibu, he will probably go to New Zealand next year.

Not a probable, more a definite. It only depends on when the receiving zoo will be able to move the bachelor group they currently hold to another exhibit within their zoo.

Prime-minister Marc Rutte of the Netherlands brought 4 Lesser Antillean iguanas with him after visiting Sint Maarten. They will find a new home at Rotterdam Zoo which already has a male of this species.

Article ( in Dutch ) :

Premier Rutte neemt vier leguanen mee uit Caribisch Nederland

and in English :

This move has been in the planning stages for a good year or so. Really chuffed it has finally happened. Very important for the conservation breeding program in Europe and a highly threatened taxon at that.

BTW: Quite shocked no airline seemed to be prepared to take this smallish live cargo aboard …. Now it is a form of bad bad airline PR!!!

Wondering: Does anyone know anything about the 4 Birds-of-paradise that were given to Rotterdam Zoo in 2016 by San Diego Zoo?
