Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp News 2022

Good and bad news at the California sea lions. Sea lion June had a young. It's a male and he is named after one of the animal keepers: Jos. The father is Nick. Sea lion Toya was also pregnant. However, she had complications during the delivery. It was decided to operate on her. Despite a successful operation, she died shortly afterwards due to complications. Unfortunately, her youngster did not survive either.

-The association Vrienden van Blijdorp (Friends of the Rotterdam Zoo) are donaring €175.000 for the finishing touches to the new red panda enclosure, as well as the expansion of the Indian rhino enclosure in that direction.
-The municipality will donate €18 million for the restoration of the Rivièrahal. While very welcome, this still leaves a gap of around €26 million, but maybe it can help with making a headstart on the Victoria Serre. That project is slated to started in around 2 years and expected to take another 2.
-Death of the young Chilean pudu, departure of a surplus adult male to Apenheul. 1.1 remain.
-Births of a forest reindeer (not sure if that had already been reported), a northern pintail and a red-legged seriema
-Arrival of a female blue-winges goose, Blijdorp already has 2.0
-The last yellow-necked francolin living with the gelada's has been moved over the vulture aviary
-Departure of the last azure-winged wagpie, meaning there are no more corvids in Rotterdam. Also, the last crested oropendola has been moved backstage, presumably it will be moving to another zoo as very few remain
-The Mindanao bleeding heart pigeons have moved from the Nature Conservation Center to the Victoria Serre

hah yea this was known in Blijdorp for years. Pre-covid I found a few of them at the other side of the path near the maned wolf enclosure when that was still up.

I assume that if they let it happen either this is a case of not much can be done about it, or there are no real issues like prairie dogs going missing, not returning or being preyed upon?

Can't do much as they want to maintain the current design of the enclosure, and prairi dogs can luckily smell predators pretty well so they never actually 'lost' one.

Prairie dogs have been burrowing outside their enclosure for years at Belfast Zoo. A few years ago I saw loads of them out and about and quite happy digging holes all over. Seemingly they stayed near to the actual exhibit and nobody minded.

A few weeks ago a male White-naped mangabey (Cercocebus atys lunulatus) was born in the enclosure near the African savannah.

Last month 2 Nepalese red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) were born behind the scenes, but have recently together with their mother been moved to the Bergdierenrots.

-First flamingo chicks since 2004 have hatched in the new aviary! Also first time breeding with the Baers pochard
-Breeding succes with the blue-crowned laughingthrushes (on top of their first batch that was already reported here), sumatran laughingthrushes, white-faced whistling ducks, white-rumped shama's, bali mynahs, purple glossy starlings and scarlet ibisses.
-Some unexpected young (mostly dead by now) Nile crocodiles, as well as youngsters for the cape hydraxes.
-Departure of 0.1 fishing cat to France, 0.1 remain
-A big revision in the Victoria Serre (bird wing of the Rivierahal) (take note @Mr Gharial): the central segment of the greenhouse has now been connected with the back section. The 0.1 wreathed hornbill has been removed from the greenhouse (again), as well as the 1.0 snowy-crowned robin-chat. The blue-crowned laughingthrushes now live in the central segment of the Victoria Serre.
-The small separation enclosure in the gorilla viewing cabin has seemingly been dismantled.
-The Rotterdam Zoo will cooperate with the Port of Rotterdam on the development of 'RoffaReefs', the floating nurseries the zoo is developing for both aquariums and in-situ reefs.
