Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp News

Yesterday, on newyearsday, a giraffe was born. A female called Ziba. She is the daughter of Anne.

the breedingfemale of the spotted hyenas died. Now the "group" consists of the male and his daugther "spot".

3 Manedwolves have been born.

Soon elefant douanita should give birth (planned date of birth is january the 5th.)

Here is the giraf...

Christel (from 2008) is the biggest here on the picture, the little one is Ziba...

In Taman Indah everybody is waiting on the next Elepehant birth... There is something in the air!

After the breeding female of the spotted hyenas died, daughter "Spot" moved to Dvur kralove. So now the male is (temporarily) left alone.

The breeding female Banteng seems to have died as well. Luckily a new female arrived some time ago so there is still a 1,1 potential breeding couple.

For the first time since 1899!!! pelicans were born in the zoo. On 20 jan the first one, and today a second chick hatched. (btw, blijdorp has Pelecanus crispus)

Some new arrivals;
4 Crinifer piscator. 1,1 will remain in blijdorp, 0,2 will go to avifauna.
5 rock hyraxes.

Elephant Douanita gave birth this morning at 1.10 am to a healthy daughter. She already drunk some.

She's named Tonya, after the zoo director Ton Dorresteyn who will retire at the end of this month. A perfect farewell present!

I went over to have a look. Here are some of my pictures;

the whole group. Left; Irma, Trong nhi (the sister), Douanita (the mother), Tonya, and right; Bangka.

Trong is a bit jealous and keeps trying to kick tonya. Bangka and douanita protect tonya very well and push trong away. Irma is distracted. I seems that she has contractions again as well now. doing all sorts of crazy positions to try and limit the pain. Perhaps the mummified dead calf will come out now... Her hormones seem to have triggerd this respons. Perhaps because of all the comotion, perhaps because tonya tried to succle...

Some other shots;

This morning they had to close Taman Indah because it seems that the birth of Tonya has stimulated Irma into going into labor as well. She was supposed to give birth one year ago but the baby elephant died and is mummyfing inside hew womb. This will be a very risky stillbirth for her. Let's all hope ....

Everything is fine with Irma. The vets removed during a 12 hours surgery the dead calf. She's now calm and amongst the rest of the herd.

wow, that's a great relief, been dead in her for nearly 14 months, I was keeping my eye out if anything bad was going happen to her.

The local version of a national newspaper devoted a whole Saturday page on this story:

The ones who were there will not easily forget. The locally anaesthetized elephant Irma, chained, surrounded by an army of vetenerians, keepers and other experts, working hard to release her from the baby she wasn’t able to give birth to one year ago.

Zoo Blijdorp, Tuesday morning. Finally the long awaited calve of elephant Douanita is born – her name is Tonya, after director Ton Dorresteijn who will leave March 1st. Happiness but also concern because Irma, the oldest member of the herd went into labor.

It started what should have happened one year ago: delivering a young that died within the womb at that moment but seems to come out now (note for the critics, the womb of an elephant is located just beneath the backbone – removing the remains by an operation is really not an option if you want the mother elephant to survive. There is history material that shows that the dead young can be successfully removed (many) years later). What looked like a releave turned into a nightmare.

Then it’s Wednesday. A reconstruction of that day in the words of the new director Marc Damen, who closely followed the whole process.

08.00 hrs. Elephant Irma is found laying down in Taman Indah, the inside enclosure at Blijdorp. The decision is made to close down the complex for public with a note that “With baby Tonya everything is OK, but her birth trigged a lot in aunt Irma” (note: which sort of was expected and anticipated).

10.00 hrs: The vetenarian concludes that the dead young of Irma is locked at the end of the birth chanal, close to the pelvis. They want to avoid cutting into the elephant because healing is not so easy. “For us only one thing mattered and that was Irma surviving this ordeal.” According to Damen.

12.00 hrs: A press release is sent: “The pending birth of this calve brings great risks for the mother animal.”. Irma is lightly sedated. It has been decided to make a cut of 10 cm to access the corpse. It turns out to be a breech. Besides, the calve is very big and heavy (85 kg.). Damen: “Fortunately Irma is a easy cow”.

14.00 hrs. The operation continues. The team, now consisting of two vetenerians, get parts of the deceased elephant out. The people that have been working for hours on this are getting tired. The mood becomes subdues as big parts of the young – among others het head – is stuck. All consider the remaining options.

17.00 hrs. More help comes in, among others specialists from the University of Utrecht and another vetenerian. “Those had a fresh view and what we needed most: more muscle power.” According to Damen.

20.00 hrs. Feverisly work continues. It’s real teamwork, according to Damen. “For example the two keepers at the front of Irma who held her trunk and frontleg. They have been standing there for ten hours and made sure the elephant remained calm. We had to trust each other blindly because an elephant remains a dangerous animal.

22.00 hrs. The last parts of the elephant corpse come out: the head with the trunk. After that it was a matter of cleaning the wound and closing it. The outer skin layer is still open, so the wound flued can get out.

01.00 hrs. “Operation Irma” is over. The remains of the dead calve are being brought to the lab; it turns out te be female. Because the expect problems with the wound, Irma receives antibiotics and tranquilizers.

08.00 hrs. The keepers and vetenerian check on Irma. She didn’t sleep and is exhausted. Because they didn’t want to trouble her any more and mix the antibiotics with the food. But she’s alert enough to refuse just that food. Damen: “we have good hopes that everything will turn out for the better. The vetenerian has convidence in that

The elephants are all doing fine so far. Yesterday was the first day they went outside for a while. Little Tonya is also drinking at her half sister Bangka! Bit weird because bangka has never been pregnant herself so far. But apparently a phantom pregnancy can lead to lactation as well... (i've added a picture of it in the gallery. I also added a picture where you can see the scar irma has from the operation)

Besides all the fuss about elephants, some other news;
- 10 gentoo penguins arrived from Odense zoo (they belong to the ellsworthi subspecies). They will probably join the kingpenguins.
- bennetwallibies arrived
- The carmine bee-eaters moved from the european aviary to the "crocodile-river".
- The lions have finally been introduced. Now the 3 (1,2) are together daily.

Thanks for your many updates from my favourite zoo Trebaruna! I have a few questions:

Where does the bennet's wallabies live? And is there an Australian section part of the zoo's plans?

Why did the bee-eaters move? And would it be possible for you to post some pictures of Crocodile River in the gallery? It opened right after my last visit...

And how is the Giraffe House looking?

I guess the bennets will join the agile wallabies & red kangaroos. But they are still offshow in quarantine.

The carmine bee-eaters were meant to be in the "crocodile river" all along. Them living in the european aviary was just a temporary measure. So now the carmines (the red/purple ones) are living in the crochouse, and the europeans (those green/yellow ones) are still in the european aviary.

i thought there were already some pics in the gallery. My bad. I'll upload some in a couple of minutes.

The giraffehouse looks about the same from the outside. Most work is going on inside. Lighting, laying the floor etc.
Construction of the baobab tree is going pretty quick. All levels are in, now they're working on putting in the stairs.

I think i forgot to mention that 2 female hyenas arrived (born in 2006 in Beauval). So the male isn't alone anymore...

Thanks for the pictures Trebaruna:) I am really looking forward to seeing the house next time I visit Blijdorp. I really wish that more zoos would attempt to make savannah houses like this one instead of the several hundreds very similar tropical houses.

How is the Arctica theme comming along?

Not much has changed. The polarbears are there, but the rest is one big buildingsite. The enclosure for the arcticfoxes is nearly finished. They tested it, but the animal escaped, so they have to make some alterations :) And they are working on the aviaries (for stellers eagle, owls, racoons), but that will still take a while i guess.

(btw. the male acrtic fox left the zoo a while ago, beacause he was the brother of most females. Now there are 4 females left. A new male will come when the animals can move into the new enclosure.)

Hallo,
On 10th March I will be in Blijdorp, I would like ask you, if the elephant's house Taman Indah is still closed for the public, I really wish to see this house from inside...Thank you for reply

Presumably the vets used this small incision/cut to reach inside Irma and remove/free up sections of the dead calf but not through this small hole, more likely by then manipulating them down through the normal birth canal. Do you think that is how it was performed? I'm glad she seems to be recovering okay too.
