Fanindra, but this time in Rotterdam...

The rhino swap took place last week. Bertus has settled well and already been mixed with Edinburgh's other juvenille male, Samir who came from Stuttgart in May.

According to rumours, young female elephant Bangka gave birth yesterday evening for her first time...

I don't know anything more yet, i'll keep you updated...

She was delivered yesterday evening in one of the outdoor enclosures. She's the fourteenth youngster of Blijdorp Zoo and the ninth female (good news!). Both mother Banka and father Timber were born at Rotterdam (they are fully unrelated) which is also a worlds first. Youngster suckled 2 hours after birth and is doing fine.

The 2 female sea otters are leaving Rotterdam, and are heading for Lisbon.

Why is this? Is Rotterdam Zoo giving up sea otters?

No, they have to go back. Lisbon is their onwner and there is almost no chance of a new male (breeding) and the male at Lisbon died a few months ago so they want the sister (who are born there) back because their mother is alone now.

click on the zoo of your choice, then on the left it says;
* Plattegrond = Map
* Fotoimpressie = Photoimpression
* Toekomstplannen = Future plans
* Geschiedenis = History
* Routebeschrijving = Route

Google translator should do the rest if you're interested enough, other then that you'll get an idea of a zoo anyways :)

Here's Blijdorp for ya;

I'm guessing they've gone to the Lisbon Oceanarium, right?

I was just at Blijdorp this past weekend and it really was weird seeing the empty exhibit for the sea otters. I sure hope they can replace them, as they really are a key animal -- and they fit with the theme of that section of the (Blijdorp) Oceanarium really well. Perhaps they can get some from a North American (Pacific coast) zoo or aquarium.

I have the same wish. But isn't it prohibited by law to transfer sea otters outside USA/North America (US Fish and Wildlife Service)?

Tiger Hermes is deceased

From the site:
On Thursday April 7th tiger Hermes of Rotterdam Zoo has suddenly died. Like many older cats Hermes suffered from a chronic kidney problem that gradually weakened him. When being fed with his usual portion of meat Hermes choked on a piece of meat and died in front of the eyes of visitors. A dramatic combination of circumstances. Hermes was 16 years old. He was in Rotterdam Zoo since May 1996 and has conceived six young.

The okapi female Kamina has given birth this to week to as so far unsexed youngster.

Lifted from the website are plans for 2011.

In 2011 there is a lot to be done. Two giraffes expected, a young gorilla and if everything keeps going, the polar bear in the spring for the first time come out. Our planning is also a new residence for the group of raccoons in the Arctic, an aviary of African weaver birds with Cape ground squirrels and a flow residence swamp wallabies. But an important part of 2011 will still remain in the sign of the heavy subsidy cuts. In that respect, it's an exciting period for Zoo.
