Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp Zoo News 2024

Blijdorp adds in comments on Facebook Utrecht University did an autopsy over the weekend, which showed Pooh suffered from pleurisy and pulmonary edema. A combination of these two diseases lead to her death.

Sad to hear of her passing, including the fetus. :(

A huge loss.

Blijdorp currently has between 140-150 European flamingoes. Is 20 pairs nesting the largest number ever? How many chicks have hatched now?

Do you know what species are on the wishlist?
According to the article in the link, they are:

Maccoa duck (Oxyura maccoa)
Yellow-billed stork (Mycteria ibis)
African spoonbill (Platalea alba)
Fulvous whistling duck (Dendrocygna bicolor)
Knob-billed duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos)
Little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis)
Black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus)
Bearded barbet (Pogonornis dubius)
Green wood hoopoe (Phoeniculus purpureus)

And the two wishlist types for the other side are:

Black-cheeked lovebird (Agapornis nigrigenis)
Blacksmith lapwing (Vanellus armatus)

ZooFlits published a number of maps and drawings of the plans for the expanded elephant exhibit at Blijdorp.

That's a great link and thanks for posting it. I'm intrigued to see if Blijdorp's finished Asian Elephant exhibit really does look like the renderings and maps, but we'll have to wait and see. The zoo has certainly committed to elephants and I like the look of that gigantic rock formation. It will be neat if the old bat cave is indeed turned into an exhibit for Francois' Langurs. What is the most recently announced target date for this huge project to open?

I can't quickly find anything about a timeline for this project, although from what I understand this project has the first priority for large projects in the coming years. The fact they are applying for a permit does suggest they want to actually start construction in the coming years.

- Arrival of some green wood hoopoes and fulvous whistling ducks in the African Mangrove aviary
- Internal transport of the white-naped mangabeys: all animals that were previously with the gorillas, with exception of one male, are back in the main enclosure
- Tonkin langur Andre will be moving to Pairi Daiza, another breeding male will be transported over from England
- Death of the last San Francisco garter snake, bringing down the number of snake species in Rotterdam to just 2
- The Kelpforest section of the Oceanium has been entirely cleared out, with exception of some leopard sharks from Artis, a lobster, the jellyfish in the plastic exposition and the sea lions. This section will be converted to a North Sea themed area.
- The seasonpass holder magazine will be 100% digital moving forward

Sumatran tigress Nonja died this morning. She and male Geram had been introduced together for the first time the day before. This introduction ended in a fight, after which keepers separated the two animals again. This morning, Nonja was found dead. Further examination showed she had a bleeding of her lung. Most likely caused by a fang of the male. Due to her fur, this injury had not been spotted earlier.
