Sumatran tigress Nonja died this morning. She and male Geram had been introduced together for the first time the day before. This introduction ended in a fight, after which keepers separated the two animals again. This morning, Nonja was found dead. Further examination showed she had a bleeding of her lung. Most likely caused by a fang of the male. Due to her fur, this injury had not been spotted earlier.

Other way around, the Rhino was temporarily in Blijdorp, and is now moving to Köln to produce offspring with a new female

There was no breeding. It was always the intention that Malte would only stay in Blijdorp temporarily. He had to leave Magdeburg due to lack of space there, and there was no new permanent place for him yet.

That begs the question when a new breeding bull will arrive at Blijdorp?

On top: Their breeding female's juvenile male calf Nasor should leave the zoo quite soon. He is now almost 4 (in November this year) of age.

In better news, unexpectedly two red pandas were born at Rotterdam Zoo. There was no indication the female was gestating. The two red panda cubs are not expected to leave their nest box until September.

They have recently been sexed! They are a male and a female.

The 5-year female Asian Lion REENA has been euthanized, due to severe health issues.
ZooFlits on Instagram: "Diergaarde Blijdorp heeft afscheid genomen van leeuwin Reena. Het 5-jarige vrouwtje kampte al van jongs af aan met neurologische klachten. De ziekteverschijnselen werden de laatste maanden steeds erger. Eerder werden ook al zusjes Mette en Asha ingeslapen, die aan dezelfde aandoening leden. Blijdorp heeft nog één koppel Aziatische leeuwen over. Zij hebben groen licht van het Europese fokprogramma om voort te planten, wat belangrijk is om de kwetsbare soort voor uitsterven te behoeden."

This is becoming a though year for Blijdorp. With so many iconic animals passing, and the high hopes for the feline species breeding becoming quite the opposite.

A bumper crop! Probably the highest number of king pinguïn hatched at any zoo this past decade? Anyone with concrete data???

According to Zurich Zoo’s “adopt an animal” site, they also had at least 5 hatchings this year (Zurich Zoo news thread on Zoochat just reports “multiple hatchings”). Together with 3 at Wuppertal, it does feel like a good year for king penguins this year

Birth of a Balabac Mouse Deer.

Dit zeldzame dwerghertje komt alleen nog voor op drie kleine eilandjes in het zuiden van de Filipijnen. Een volwassen Balabac-kantjil is al klein van formaat: ongeveer 40 tot 47 cm van neus tot staart en slechts 18 cm hoog... Het jong is dus helemaal mini. In de eerste weken na de geboorte verstopt het jong zich vaak, maar na verloop van tijd zal het steeds vaker zichtbaar zijn. Heb jij het al gespot?"

A Mhorr Gazelle has been transferred to Gaiazoo Kerkrade.
Diergaarde Blijdorp - Rotterdam Zoo on Instagram: "Deze week verhuisde één van onze Mhorrgazelles naar @gaiazoo_kerkrade. Een goed voorbeeld hoe we samen met andere dierentuinen een reservepopulatie opbouwen om uitsterven te voorkomen. De Mhorrgazelle wordt ernstig bedreigd. The Swamp Wallabies are back on show.
Diergaarde Blijdorp - Rotterdam Zoo on Instagram: "Ze springen weer rond! De moeraswallaby's zijn weer terug in hun verblijf én je **** er weer doorheen lopen. De afgelopen periode verbleven zij achter de schermen, omdat hun monumentale stal een opknapbeurt kreeg. Hun buren, de bosrendieren, zullen over een aantal weken ook weer hun intrede nemen in hun verblijf."

A happy occasion in Blijdorp: overnight a reticulated giraffe was born. The mother ('Kimberley') is experienced and has raised multiple youngsters before this one.

The female François' langurs (Trachypithecus francoisi) at Diergaarde Blijdorp have recently been joined by a male again. The male in question is Shinji from Twycross Zoo. The zoo hopes to have young of this species again soon.

As part of the breeding program, Amur leopard male Kitan has been moved to Zoo Leipzig. The nineteen-year-old female Vatne continues to live out her old age in Blijdorp.
