Bongo Update

Having viewed the new Bongo ARR, i thought it best to fill everyone in on the latest developments:

The population currently stands at six with three males and three females after the recent deaths of 1.1:
Melbourne - 1.1
Monarto - 2.0
Taronga - 0.2
One female at Taronga is post-reproductive.
The pair at MZ have been successfully introduced and the female is pregnant.
A male from Monarto was scheduled to be transferred to Taronga in October to pair with Taronga's other female though i'm not sure if this transaction has definitely taken place.

The species coordinator is investigating opportunities to import Bongo from the US into New Zealand and then into Australia.

:)

Thanks for the update. I hope the SC is successful because they must be getting very inbred by now.

I thought Taronga had 2 males, but I must be mistaken. That is hopeful news and I hope it can be achieved (both the birth of the bongo at Melbourne and the importation of more bongo)

What about Western Plains Zoo? They had three in a covered yard near the hippos when I was there last year. What's happened to these?

TWPZ had three females two of which were transferred to Taronga. TWPZ were going to start breeding with the third female and a male from Monarto but the female died before the male was moved and the transfer was in turn, cancelled by the SC.

Hence, Bongo are now absent from TWPZ.

It could be to little to late for this species in oz

To think about all the money that was given to build the Bongo exhibit, bit of a waste really

Is this easier than import from EEP in Europe? Both - IMO - could be source populations.

Whether it be wise to continue a separate ARR is a matter of discussion.
Both the SSP and EEP operate successfully. Nay, we even have surplus and breeding stops would you believe ...

Thanks for the explanation. I was hoping you'd forgotten some just so there could be a few more to add to the list. :)

Below is an extract from the ARR:

DAFF Biosecurity has approved an IRA to import bovids into Australia from New Zealand.
The acquisition of animals is still limited to South Africa, US, Canada and Singapore.

anyone have any ideas on what could go in the vacant exhibit?

Nothing at the moment. I'd say it will be kept until Bongo arrive from elsewhere wether that be short or long term, the interps alone would cost a small fortune to take down and redo.

So what happened to the males that were at Taronga?

I know one male died within the past year but i'm unsure about any other males.

How far back are we going? I can't find anything in the past year or so to suggest that there was more than the one male mentioned above.
