Melbourne Zoo bongo

They came from Adelaide and arrived just before christmas. I thought I would be smart and go down when they only just arrived but I couldn't see any because there was green shade cloth around so that they could get used to the enclosure. I have seen them on a more recent visit and someone posted a picture of one in the gallery.

Did Adelaide shift the bongo out to make room for the giant panda enclosure, or do they just have extra hoofstock? It is hard to believe that an Aussie zoo actually has extra hoofstock...haha.

With only 8 hectares or something like that at Adelaide, a species or two have to go everytime another one comes along.

And now that school holidays have finished, it's safe to go back to the zoo.

Tell me about it 3 weeks ago when I went, 35 degress and not a lot of space to move,

Though right now the last few days have been over 40. bah,,....

You got that right, Hix. Nothing worse then trying to walk around taronga with all the kids during school holidays.

The next two weeks, during weekdays, is THE best time to visit because the schools haven't had time to organise excursions to the zoo yet.

I've been reading all about the Melbourne heatwave over here in Canada, where we still have bloody snow on the ground. Was it really over 43 degrees Celsisus for 3 consecutive days? Roger Federer and the other tennis players must really be sweating it out at the Aussie Open!

yep it really was, yesterday got a max of 46. There was overuse of power so some houses were cut of power. My house lost on Thursday between 6 pm and 3 am.

They've had to close the roof of the tennis and let me tell you it was humid as hell while I was there and the amount of people all sweating and cheering made it so uncomfortable. I would hate to be in Canada...I'd rather 45 anyday than anything less than 5 degrees.

I agree pat, I'd rather extremly hot than extreme cold. Maybe it's just because I personally hate being cold. ;)

I agree with you guys! It's time for me to look into a visit down under...haha.

Since jay is getting grouchy about the direction this thread is headed (probably due to the Queensland heat :p) we had better get back on track. Melbourne's bongos........

The male is a very tame animal, was born at Taronga and went to Adelaide in approx. 2004. I don't know the source of the female (Taronga too?) but I hope they breed. Look after them Melbourne - they are irreplaceable!
