In Planckendael last year the group of bonobos whas split up because of a female who had kidnapped a baby from another mother. They have been split up for six months but are united in one great group again.

On 13/5 bonobo Zamba escaped from the island in Planckendael. He is the lowest ranked male and there was a bit of anxiety in the group with one of the males often charging to others. Zamba jumped over the water and stayed in a tree close to the island. They offered him a banana with a anesthisicum in and returned him to the building.

About Zamba's escape he jumped over the moat of 7 meters wide. The group was confined to the inside enclosures and after review of the outside enclosure the group will be allowed onto the island again. Everyone but Zamba will be allowed outside for the foreseeable future.

Twycross Zoo Birth

Twycross Zoo welcomes baby bonobo

New arrival Upendi and mother Cheka within the bonobo enclosure at Twycross Zoo, Leicestershire. Upendi is less than a month old (born Jan 16) and is the first bonobo to be born at the zoo since 2019.

Is UPENDI male or female? I did not find any answer online.

The zoo of Zlin in the Czech Republic is going to rebuild its old and empty elephant house to keep bonobos in the future.
