Just discovered this book on Amazon, published one year ago. Details the entire history and development of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Could be interesting to the hardcore zoo fanatics among us (Snowleopard are you reading this? ;)).

I am most definitely reading this thread.:) I know of the book and it was even given a long review in Zoo Grapevine magazine (summer 2012). Tim Brown always reviews 3-4 books in each of the quarterly issues and here is a quote on the book: "Well, WAZA needs to make people in general (not just zoo directors) aware of its mission on behalf of its members and wildlife in general. I worry that this book has failed to do that. Zoo professionals, zoo enthusiasts, conservational organizations, will find this volume invaluable, it is an essential read for anyone seriously interested in the past, present and future of zoos - but it won't find the common man in its current format, of that I'm certain. Which is a great pity!"

I did not order the book off of Amazon as it is about $30 Canadian and only 200 pages in length and those statistics do not make it appealing to me.

I have copy. It's bit celebratory in tone but that was its purpose. It does trace the history and evolution of WAZA clearly and in an interesting way. There are also plenty of interesting photographs. The sections also include a history and development of zoos and conservation. If you are interested in zoo history, or WAZA specifically, it is worth the money.

I was reading it on my trip to Europe and am almost done. I actually find it a bit disappointing - very dry. Just lots of lists of dates and resolutions, most of the photos are just group shots of zoo directors at the various yearly meetings. Really not worth the money IMO.

Just depends what you are interested in. I enjoyed the articles and liked the group photos showing how the profile of zoo directors changed over time (men/ women, age, formality/ informality). There are plenty of other photos too. It is what it is described as. If you are expecting something glossy and a bit flash you will be disappointed; it's not a mass market book.

If I did not think it was worth the thirty bucks (or whatever I paid) when I got it, it is definitely not worth the going price now. I just checked Amazon and wow - new copies for 375 US dollars and used copies starting at 288 US dollars. Now I do not know if I should keep mine for the collector value or try to sell it?

I assume you clicked on the link at top, which is probably the original link being cached. Try doing a new search for it on Amazon.

Arizona Docent must have been looking at in Canadian dollars :p

maybe you could provide a link to what you were looking at. I can only find normal prices on both American and Englsh Amazon, and they seem cheaper than the original price not ten times more.

I did a search on both English and American variants of Amazon, and got pretty reasonable prices:

The UK price of £14 - and only £11 if bought from a third-party seller - is both reasonable and significantly less than the price suggested by Arizona Docent ;)

OK, I was looking at a different WAZA book. My apologies to all. Apparently the one on this thread (the cheap one) I already gave away because I had no reason to keep it.

The one I still have and that I was thinking of features different field projects that are supported by WAZA member zoos. Here is the link and it has already gone up since I posted this a couple days ago. Now it is up to 425 US dollars for either new or used.

If it keeps escalating at this rate, I will be able to sell it for a hundred thousand dollars a year from now and then retire! ;)
