Ponderosa Zoo Brazilian Tapir?

According to the centre's website, Ponderosa is in possession of a Brazilian Tapir (Tapirus terrestris).

Does anyone have any information on how and where they (could have) obtained it?

I thought it quite out of the ordinary for Ponderosa, as the centre usually only keeps birds of prey and "smaller" exotic mammals like meerkats and lemurs, I wasn't expecting a tapir!

Any information, no matter how significant, would be much appreciated!

I think they have had it for a while now. They were in possession of 2 water buffalo about 10 years ago aswell. Don't know what became of them.

I do think a tapir seems like a likely step up for a progressing exotic collection.

Brazilian Tapirs are held in many UK zoos and wildlife parks, even smaller ones. Many pairs are regular breeders, some having produced young into double figures over the years. They must be quite easily available for new collections as a result.

There are quite a few held and bred by private keepers too.
