I thought I'd start a thread for the goings on at Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria because in this mornings Herald Sun there was a small "feel good" article about some serval kittens moving from Mogo Zoo in New South Wales.

I agree. If I'm remembering correctley there has been a litter a year for the last three years and maybe longer.

Giraffes going to Werribee

In early May, two of Western Plains Zoo's 1yo giraffes, will be heading to Werribee Zoo.

The giraffes, Amani and Thembi, are half-brothers and will be sharing an enclosure with their Grandfather, Anthony, another male giraffe, Kinta and other species of african ungulates.(More info on the Zoos Victoria homepage.)

I don't know why Werribee keep a batchelor herd. I'd much rather have the a couple of males at Melbourne and be able to build up a proper herd out at Werribee instead of keeping a pair in Melbourne and shipping out all of the offspring.
Thanks for the news by the way. :)

I think the main reason is the space required to keep giraffe.. which is huge. :) Also the difficulty in getting permission to breed and keep..

the region needs a bachelor herd and that herd will potentially be larger than two or three animals. thus, if surplus males are to be consolidated at one location then it is highly logical to have that group at an open range zoo rather than at a small urban one. melbournes enclosure is really only suitable for managing a pair of giraffes and their offspring.

also, as you may have noticed, zoos try to avoid moving adult giraffe with the general practice being move them young and make the move permanent. so moving melbourne's pure rothschild pair to werribee isn't necessarily an easy task.

i think the current situation at zoos victoria is the preferred option form a regional management point of view.
