Brevard Zoo Brevard Zoo News

I visited the Brevard Zoo over the weekend. Rainforest Revealed was great.

The coatis at Brevard are Nasua narica right? Sign says White-nosed coati but lists scientific name as Nasua nasua. Species definitely looks like a white-nosed though.

3.0 African lion arriving from Naples Zoo:

3 young lions will leave Naples Zoo in April and head to Brevard Zoo

In 2013, first time mom, Shani and her mate, Masamba, were genetically matched for breeding by the Species Survival Plan.

Then Shani successfully gave birth to the three cubs on May 14, 2019.

Eventually the cubs may be separated to get paired with females for breeding. For now, Karoo, Ruaha, and Chobe will live together and celebrate their third birthday in their new home.

Florida Grasshopper Sparrow Chicks Are Here!

Back in March, we let you know that we were
beginning the process of breeding the critically endangered Florida grasshopper sparrow. We are happy to share that after several weeks of buzzing, nest building and egg laying, our first chicks have hatched!

Once they have matured and been medically cleared, the chicks will be released into the wild to boost the natural population of their species. They will serve as invaluable members of this population which is on a steep decline due to habit loss, disease, limited genetic diversity and nonnative fire ants (which can invade nests and feed on chicks).

First-time mom Ava and mate Gator are the parents of our first-ever Florida grasshopper sparrow chicks. This pair, along with three others, were genetically matched by a team of Florida grasshopper sparrow experts to ensure the healthiest and most diverse population of the species.

Through the zoo’s news blog, they announced that “Lauren” an eight-year old Grevy’s Zebra who’s now a first-time mother; had successfully given birth to a colt back on June 1st, (a first for the zoo). In addition, the zoo also added in their blog that “Iggy” their other pregnant zebra, is also expected to give birth relatively soon; but has yet to show any signs of labor from the time this reply was first posted.
