A bit of news from Bristol zoo.

Births.
0.0.1 Howler Monkey born last Saturday.
0.0.1 Livingstone's fruit bat.

Other news.
Pudu and young moved into the Prairie dogs enclosure.

Old pudu enclosure, old lemur enclosure and aviaries have all been demolished and the whole site cleared apart from one very old tree. Not sure what is to be in this area.

Twilight world enclosure on the right hand side of the Aye-Aye has been cleared for a new exhibit.

I was hoping so! :D Sounds like an interesting mix, would quite like to see this exhibit with the added Pudu. Thanks for the update, hoping to get down to Bristol in the Spring.

Little Lion Man - thanks for the news , not often that we hear about Bristol . When you say that old Pudu enclosure has been demolished I assume this is what was the old Penguin pool ?

We would welcome more news from Bristol- despite being a (small) major UK zoo it seems to go long periods with no mention on Zoochat.

Il see what I can do, I am at Bristol pretty regularly.

As for what the old pudu enclosure use to hold I am unsure. I have only been visiting Bristol over the last few months so I am not aware of what use to be in certain enclosures in the past.

This area is being made ready for the new meerkat enclosure (yawn). Along with the demolition of the lemur enclosures, is the disappearance of the old convex bars that originally formed the front of the outdoor gorilla cages and were more recently employed as a roof to the pergola that covered the footpath. Bit of a shame.

Long ago those were originally Bird Aviaries. Perhaps they'll recycle the old Gorilla grilles somewhere else in the zoo, having them as a roof was a nice bit of history.

I hope so. Bristol is quite good at keeping a balance between the historical and the contemporary. It was a clever use of the bars to incorporate them in to a pergola.

Thanks for correcting me. I thought the whole area was being given over to meerkats, thank goodness it isn’t we may have something interesting to look forward to.

Don't hold your breath for too long - may be something like smarty plants and not animal related -

New meerkat manor planned for Bristol Zoo Gardens - Visit Bristol

"The new meerkat enclosure will form part of wider plans to refresh and renew the southern part of the Zoo. The plans include improvements to the children’s play area, a bridge with a hide and viewing platforms over the Zoo’s lake, and the creation of a secret garden with a Japanese fernery."

Looks like Meerkat development is in same place as old enclosure, development of play area, bridge across middle of lake?, redevelopment of aviary area and pudu enclosure (which was the old penguin enclosure).

Also found this development plan (not very easy to read) about habitat development in southern part of zoo.

I am quite happy with what I have seen and read in the document here. It seems a fairly well-balanced development of the southern part of the zoo. It proposes a sense of more inter-linked species assemblages and I quite like the biome theming too ... :)

Some interesting animals in that list. There's one I've not seen before, so I'm very excited about these developments :D Thanks for the link

Well folks I'm hoping to visit Bristol this coming Easter. It will be my first in 8 years.:)

A fascinating document - thanks for that. One word in particular did 'pika' my interest....

;)

It shows Bongo in the existing Okapi area- what happens to the Okapi?

Is this planned redevelopment of part of the ZOO connected in any way to the new Conservation Park plans being pushed further and further back?
