Bristol Zoo (Closed) Bristol Zoo news 2012

Can anyone give me a run down of how many surviving cubs he has?

Going through the Asiatic Lion threads, I found the following which as far as I can tell are still alive:

Frankfurt - KIRI (F) - born LONDON 1999
London - ABI (F) - born LONDON 1999
Rome - JADZIA (F) - born TWYCROSS 2003
Paignton - MWAMBA (M) - born TWYCROSS 2004
Edinburgh - JAYENDRA (M) - born BRISTOL 2010
Helsinki - KALYANA (F) - born BRISTOL 2010

She is 7 - so there is still time for her to be bred from although in my opinion, at this point without any new blood coming into the programme this would only delay the end.

Dvur managed to import a new pair of Asiatic lions from India this year , so it is not impossible to bring in new blood . I am not aware of any other planned importations , which are desperately needed .

Also worth noting that at present the Dvur animals are not part of the studbook either!

Rip Kamal... :( thoughts are with his keepers at Bristol

With regards to a new male, several options avaliable for UK transfers so don't expect Bristol to be waiting more than a few months for a replacement (wheather he be recommended for breeding or not)

I'm sure they will get a new male asap, both to keep the female company and also for his display value.

R.I.P Kamal. Very upsetting news. He was a beautiful Asiatic Lion and I've had the privilage to see him at Twycross Zoo.

My thoughts go out to all the cat keepers at Bristol Zoo.

Observations from today:
Ground cuscus are now on show in the former Pallas’ bat enclosure (any ideas where they are from?).
The De Brazza’s monkeys have been replaced by the Black howler monkeys.
Six-spotted ground beetle (Anthia sexguttata) are on display in bug world. I haven’t noticed them before and they're certainly worth a look; quite large and ferocious looking. Also in Bug world and showing well on my visit Thelyphonida.

Interesting - this is purely a guess, but Edinburgh did go out of the species a month or so back... so that is a possibility.

Thanks TeaLovingDave, certainly a possibility, unless anyome else knows better.

Wonder if this means they won't have De Brazzas anymore? I believe the current pair were non-breeders so maybe they have moved/will move them on?

That'd be a shame, they are lovely, very stunning looking, and show well, the baby at Twycross is lovely. I guess they fail under the 'endangered' banner.

I agree, far more colourful and 'showy' than e.g. Howlers. More places should have them IMO. Bristol had a pair, bred one female, lost the mother, I think then may have exchanged the father for a new male to make up a fresh pair, but I was told the (young)female had joint(?) problems and wouldn't be bred from.

Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary recently received some De Brazzas Monkeys I wonder if these were the pair from Bristol.

I heard some nice news for Bristol yesterday. It's one of those chains of friend of friend type thing + even though its a chain of keepers I'm going to keep quiet until its made public, but I don't think that will be long so keep fingers crossed things continue to go well.

Well thanks for sharing that

I would do a mega jump for the Bristol Wildlife Conservation Park.

Have a soft spot for the place ... it is one of those quaint small and fine collections and some of their more specialist species are in some amazing exhibits (e.g. Aquarium, Reptiliarium ...).

I find it really annoying when people put posts up saying that there is something special happening at a zoo but then can not tell us what it is. Why not just wait till you can tell the forum.
