Bristol Zoo (Closed) Bristol Zoo news 2021

If you want to know more : Bristol Zoo gorillas move to new woodland home | Zoos - eldridgedufauchard

The gorilla troop will live in a new area called Central African Forest district where you will find cherry-crowned mangabeys, african grey parrots and slender-snout crocodiles.

In addition, there will be building for reptiles, birds, amphibians, invertebrates and fishes.

More details in the article.

No sign of lions nor nocturnal animals...

I don't think the author of this article has English as a first language so I think they mean 'Blue-spotted tree monitor'.

Bit confused - does this mean a new area at Clifton or are they moving to the Wild Place?

What on earth is a Spotted Tree Watchdog?

Yes, the original article says:
Among them will be tortoises and turtles, blue-spotted tree monitors, Henkel’s leaf-tailed geckos, Madeiran land snails, tarictic hornbills, bleeding heart doves and Socorro doves, which are extinct in the wild.

I’m sure it will be an incredible enclosure for the gorillas. I wonder what their plans are for the former Wolf enclosure.

Sounds good. And with the bonus of Cherry-crowned Mangabeys planned too(copying Dublin?) I hope they do better with them than Colchester or Paignton whose small groups of these spectacular mangabeys, despite breeding, never seem to increase...

I think to lose the Lions in particular would be a great mistake....though just because they aren't mentioned here it doesn't mean they won't move too.

The zoo's own account of the plans is at New Bristol Zoo will be home to some of the world’s most threatened species | Bristol Zoo
But there is also the announcement of the closure of the bird and nocturnal houses in the New Year The closure of Forest of Birds and Twilight World | Bristol Zoo
Looks like I'd better get there quick then - the nocturnal house has been the highlight for me over the last few years! I don't think I'll be able to make the effort to visit after it closes.

I was there last week as a little bird had warned me that this was likely to happen soon. There are already some empty enclosures in the nocturnal house and some animals have access to two adjoining ones. I saw an aye-aye, Aruba rattlesnake, Henkel's leaf-tailed gecko, jumping rats, just two Turkish spiny mice and the aquarium of cave fishes. I did not see Gila monster, ground cuscus or pygmy slow loris, although I believe that they are still there.

Thanks for the warning, that certainly isn't the impressive list it was a few years ago!

Reading between the lines it seems there won't be any nocturnal exhibit at Wild Place.

Lions don't get a mention anywhere but I think a big cat is an essential showpiece and they already have them, so it would make better sense to keep them. But we don't know yet...

On the website it is showed that tigers are expected in phase 2.

I'm not going to jump to conclusions. The zoo is only going to publicise the developments at the Wild Place site that will be ready then it reopens as the new Bristol Zoo. I think this means that some of the animals currently at the zoo may go off-show for some time as the project progresses. In consequence, I would be less than amazed if the lions and then the aye-ayes do not reappear at the new zoo within a relatively short time after it reopens.

I know some bird species will not be reappearing at the new Bristol Zoo but I hope they move the penguins there. They work with the penguins in South Africa and visitors love them so I assume there are plans.

Yes, you are right of course. I agree the AyeAyes could well re-appear as they are a high profile species. I hope the Lions do too eventually.

I find the mention of Negros Bleeding heart dove very interesting!
