Bristol Zoo (Closed) Bristol Zoo News 2022

Can anyone confirm if the Crowned Lemurs that have moved to Yorkshire Wildlife Park are from Bristol? Tiako, Loko and Sonny.

I know Bristol had a pair Tiako and Loko so I'm guessing this is the same two animals plus their son?

Event announced by the zoo today:

Join us on 28 and 29 May, for ‘The Zoo and You, Memory Show and Tell’ – a not-to-be-missed event, where we'll be revealing hidden gems and rarely-seen treasures from the Zoo's incredible 185-year history. Escape the everyday as you explore historical exhibits, from photographs and film footage to signage and records.

We’re also inviting visitors to share their own personal keepsakes and favourite memories, moments and stories that span generations.

There will be opportunities to learn about the Zoo’s history and its role in pioneering world-renowned conservation work.

Gather friends and family for a fun day out, as you laugh, reminisce and share your much-loved memories of Bristol Zoo Gardens.

Hi @Pertinax (The Ape Expert) and @Gigit. Do you think the Gorilla Enclosure at Wildplace, will open to the public before Wild Place is rebranded?. Realistically a Gorilla Enclosure should take 6 months to a year to build. This will take us upto Summer 2023. The rebranding will not happen until late 2024. This leaves us with an 11 month stint without Gorillas. TBH I think the Gorilla enclosure should reopen next year. Finally seeing Zoo guests is good enrichment for Gorillas. Secondly Gorillas are a big draw for any Zoo. If the Gorilla enclosure opens prior to the rebranding, more people will be enticed to Wild Place. This will stand the new Bristol Zoo in good stead for when it opens.
I’ve heard that the new Bristol Zoo will lack Asiatic Lions. Due to this I think the nearby Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm should house them. Noah’s Ark have a vacant Tiger enclosure. With a slight modification this would be perfect for Asiatic Lion’s. What do my fellow Zoochatters think about my idea,of Noah’s Ark housing Bristol Zoo’s Asiatic Lions.

They're Rebranding for early 2024 i think, I think the Gorilla enclosure will be done fairly quickly as all the tree's are already there all they have to do is add the stream barrier as well as the house, but if they don't move them instantly/don't construct the house, i think the conservation breeding centre will be done relatively quickly and the ostriches will arrive fairly soon due to the enclosure for them already being there all they need is to expand their animal house

Does anyone know if the full species list has been published yet as well, or are they still waiting to announce the rest

I must have missed something. When are Ostriches being introduced to WP? And has there been any announcement as to what is going into the former Wolf enclosure?
And where will the new Gorilla enclosure be located?
Finally, as the two will overlap for the next two years, shouldn’t there now be a single Bristol Zoo/WP thread

There won't be much need for a Bristol Zoo thread beyond September. Wild Place will effectively be the 'New Bristol Zoo' from then anyway regardless of when they change the name.

On the future Bristol zoo website in design proposals they announced that ostriches would go in the giraffe+zebra+eland habitat when they extend it, where the wolf enclosure is they are going to put the gorilla's there but with a lot of new landscaping

Birdland announced that the African penguins from Bristol are going there, sadly their not going to the new Bristol zoo
Not a surprise. The priority has to be a good range of species in nice new enclosures. A penguin pool is bound to expensive and quite tricky to construct, but if they can sort it later and moving the penguins will let them reuse/update the filter system if they want to.

If Bristol Zoos Fur Seals don’t relocate to Wild Place,I think they should move to The National Seal Sanctuary. This Sanctuary is in Gweek Cornwall. Occasionally The Seal Sanctity takes in animals from elsewhere. An example of this is their resident male Sealions who came from Spain.

I think it’s unlikely that the fur seals will move to wildplace especially if the penguins aren’t, Although the plans for the new Bristol zoo look good, I’m saddened that they didn’t keep to their promise of bringing the majority of Bristol zoo animals to wildplace, at this point it seems like it’ll just be the gorillas, red panda and what is going into the conservation breeding centre

Is the Zooropia Course being relocated to Wild Place? This attraction is very popular and costs extra. Due to this it would be a logical move.

I ask as when my now 12 year old Sister was younger she went on it. She got less than half the way around before hollering the Zoo down. This was funny because she requested to go up. This is probably my strongest memory of Bristol Zoo. It’s sad the Zoo is closing as my Sister would love the course now she’s older.

Does anyone know where the Tree Kangaroos are going once the zoo closes please?

I think it would be unlikely sadly as they have a high ropes like attraction at wildplace at the moment, i have had fond memories of it too but they would be unlikely to invest in a new one so early on, fingers cross in phase 2 they will build a better one

Does anyone know of any more rumours or information of what animals are moving to the new Bristol zoo, I think like most of us I would like to get rid of the paranoia of knowing whether or not my favourite species from the zoo are leaving or staying or what new species there getting at the new Bristol zoo that they haven't announced yet

I know the lions, flamingos and penguins are going but other than that no clue

Hi Charles,

I believe it will just be the gorillas and blue eyed black lemurs mammal wise going to Wildplace from Bristol. There’s a list of a hand full of some
Endangered birds, lower vertebrates and inverts I think in a previous post in this thread!
