Bristol Zoo Project Bristol zoo project news 2024

Maybe the best chance of manatees returning to UK would be one of those surprisingly good private places that pop up? I’m thinking the likes of Johnson’s of Old Hurst, or Crocodiles of the World
I could definitely see that, but personally I would love to ZSL get them at either London or Whipsnade (potentially as a replacement for the sealions in a way), and they are more likely to have the funds than a lot of other zoos.

London Zoo's last manatee died almost sixty-one years ago (on 7th March 1963, to be precise). Like you, I would love to see the ZSL aquire manatees again but think it unlikely.

However I very much hope I'm proved wrong.
Thought allegedly it could have happened if Biota had reached fruition!

I don't know for sure whether the other two died or were moved. When I lasted visited, several years ago, there were four. The other two must have gone some time ago I think. I have a feeling they may have been quietly moved elsewhere due to fighting, rather than that they died, but am not entirely sure on that.

I thought they had died given their ages but they have been gone for a while and as they both disappeared at the same time you’re probably right.

Sorry for more sad news but according to the website it appears that the Sumatran laughing thrush has either moved or passed away which is a shame as this individual was one of my favourites at both sites

hopefully though a new or off show bird species goes on show soon
I’d put good money on Paignton sending theirs!

What do you mean when you say "according to the website" but then say "has either moved or passed away"? That sounds like you're just making guesses at something not actually stated on the website?

On the bird section of the website I checked a few days ago and it said 7 species of birds including Sumatran laughing thrush and today it says 6 not to mention the pictures of the Sumatran laughing thrush have been removed as well as them saying that they have them, seeing as the zoo hasn’t announced any animal deaths or moves for quite some time despite there being some I doubt that they would’ve made an announcement about the bird so this is what I am going off, however I will clarify on my next visit

Visited today a few updates

• The start of the frame of the red panda enclosure has gone up and new paths have been made for it
• didn’t spot the red river hog again which was odd same with the eland
• the zebra were separated from one another, they were on my last visit too
• all signage for the Sumatran laughing thrush has gone so like was previously speculated it seems like their are no longer at the zoo

Where are the red pandas going?
