Bristol Zoo Project Bristol zoo project news 2024

Visited today

More work has started on CAF and new ostrich enclosure, The border of the gorilla enclosure is starting to become visible with a large fence around the foliage area, presumably they will start the moat soon

The old pond and viewing hut near the giraffes have been removed and filled in, looking like the extension is almost complete just the new fence and shelter needed

As well as this, A large pick up truck and tractors are in the walled garden, all i could see is the area between the portaloo and the aviaries has been cleared, I'm hoping this means the red vented cockatoos will be made visible on show finally

Also Mary is now looking after her eggs very well, drummer not so much but hopefully some little ostriches will be on the way soon

Attended one of the 'Summer Late' events over the weekend, which actually went really well, was nice to see the animals past closing time (the event went on till 9pm), got some good pictures of the Cheetah in particular, which in previous visits wasnt out in the day.

All around the Zoo had different types of live music which was really nice including from the Bristol Symphony Orchestra, I particularly liked their rendition of some of the Coldplay songs. In the Bear Wood they had a rendition of Peter and the Wolf with a narrator etc.

I know Edinburgh Zoo have done simular events in the past, I hope Bristol Zoo keep up the trend and host more of these sorts of events. Was great to see a good turnout too, staff were friendly as always.

A male Tarictic Hornbill was hatched recently and has now left the nest.

It appears the eland is being crate trained (or horsebox trained to be more accurate).

A new enclosure has been built for children. It is close to the Bear Wood entrance and features an impressive climbing frame / treehouse. It seems to suit their needs very well.

BZP posted an image of a red panda on their social media channels today captioned “Nose to Nose with Neora”. I thought they had Nilo from Whipsnade?

Well, that answers who swapped with Nilo. Someone spotted Nilo back at Whipsnade recently, so they must have moved him back without announcing anything. No idea if Neora is Whipsnade young or elsewhere

He is a one year old male - from Flamingo Land. He arrived just a few weeks ago and is just settling in.

Quite a big update regarding future species plan (Not the central African forest but what's happening after that) and things as i spoke with quite a reliable volunteer but they said their having a volunteer briefing soon and they'll have more information then

only a couple updates around the zoo : Mary's eggs still haven't hatched and its looking like they may not unfortunately, the new red panda Neora is a lot more friendly then Nilo as Neora comes up to the glass and the new female is coming from France and it looks like their starting on building the gorilla house, they.ve dug a whole presuming for drainage electrics etc (im not a builder so i don't know) but theirs a lot of materials near it at the moment

Regarding future species, according to the volunteer (They're a volunteer not a keeper so they know bits but not everything just before i start) they said :

The 80% of threatened species are in fact critically endangered species, which will make the zoo have more critically endangered species compared to other species which may be one of the most in the uk (not sure about this bit but i don't know about other zoos stocklists etc)

They're are either going to be around 70 new or around 70 species at the zoo (they weren't too sure about this number)

And regarding the grevy zebra/ new antelope for the giraffe paddock, they weren't too sure about timelines of when their will be new zebra's/new antelope but that the existing zebra's will in the future (they're not sure exactly when) will be leaving at some point

It was very nice talking to this volunteer as i haven't seen them in a while, they didn't know if there would be more mongoose lemur or a new species of lemur either but im hoping there will be some new faces soon at the zoo as so many iconic animals have left the collection within a short space of time

Final little update : The zoo in Yorkshire Aron is at yorkshire wildlife park now with some females

What is Mary? I'm guessing probably not a Red Panda.

And what is Aron? Please specify what animal a name belongs to. People shouldn't have to scroll back through a thread just to find out what animal a person is talking about.

I have just seen this recent article about the gorilla troop, still at the old Bristol site and awaiting their new home.

One thing from the article that I think is news - I certainly could not find it being mentioned elsewhere - is confirmation that initially the new Bristol Zoo will hopefully receive one male and two female cherry-crowned mangabeys with breeding recommendations.

The article can be read here:

They have advertised that the Gorillas will share with Cherry-crowned Mangabeys almost from the inception of the publicity about the 'Central African Rainforest' Gorilla enclosure. But I think it may be the first time they have specified the initial number.

As reported by Bristol Live- a legal objection to the development of the old zoo site
for 196 homes has been lodged by protesters. This could further impede or delay development at the new site.
