Bristol Zoo Project Bristol zoo project news 2025

Visited today

the tropical house is open, it is a lot cooler (doesn’t feel like an oven now)

the mouse deer are moving in but they’re “coming soon” presumably after half term

also the superb fruit doves and all the geckos and beetles also haven’t moved in yet. it was lovely, it felt much more spacious then before which was nice

I saw one of the new addax and they were very sweet, not very many other changes then that

the gorilla enclosure in my opinion, looks done there were lots of work people who were observing the site but weren’t working on it

It seemed like they’re waiting for glass panels as there was a large hole in the building, and other then the moat everything else seems fine

While I think the ongoing Gorilla saga is largely down to the idiotic legal challenges against the redevelopment of the zoo/idiots breaking into the zoo and causing ill-informed outrage online. The zoo can definitely be blamed for the widespread view in Bristol that more animals were meant to be transferring across. I've lost count of the amount of people I've spoken to who thought a good number of the animals were moving and the zoo in it's communications was quite happy to let people think that when it was initially closing down as part of the tactic of trying to dampen any local opposition.

Agreed, there’s been a breakdown in communication from BZL on a number of issues, their approach was entirely wrong and misleading.

It does also seem to me that the old zoo was closed prematurely, given the situation we find ourselves in over 3 years later, while I do like the new BZP (especially the bear wood area) I think they would have been a lot more opposition had people been aware of what’s happened since 2022.

Visited yesterday

didn’t see much due to the rain which the tropical house was handy for, everything has moved in bar the mouse deer and it’s on the map too

Mary and drummer the ostrich were separated and Mary had some kind of neck sling thing soo she’s still not well it seems

some signage was missing from the Benoue mixed savannah presumably their just replacing it as the addax were the only ones signed (I was only looking from the ground level outside so may have been missed other signage)

Took the trip to BZP yesterday, I've got to say, quite dissappointing currently. Some really nice enclosures around, Giraffe and Cheetah stand out, but very few of them, others like the ostriches are a bit substandard. The flow of the zoo is a bit odd, you keep having to turn back on yourself, which I'm assuming is partially because of the building going on, but not totally. Didn't see a single animal in Bear Wood, and no indoor viewing, which was sad as that was the area I was most looking forward to. The tropical house is very small and only a few birds. Bristol zoo was one of my absolute favourites previously and it's a shame where we are now years after opening.

My fingers are crossed that once the old site can be sold it leads to an injection of cash and a flurry of development

In what way are they substandard?

It’s definitely something we’ve all heard quite frequently from eachother or just from other visitors, I think it is quite a disjointed site and will be until it’s fully developed, bare in mind there’s a huge boggy forest in the middle of the site

I think for the tropical house they’ve fit quite a lot in for the space I thought

I do think the sale of the site will boost prospects, at least for me I wish they just filled some of the empty space such as the small area of “rocks” near the geladas or the area of bark chipping near the entrance but I don’t want to go down a tangent

What I would say is it’ll be interesting to see how they go about the “masterplan” as the tropical house is now on part of the site of where the rhinos are meant to be going

also with regards to ur comments about “substandard” if your referring to the enclosure they are moving soon but I think it’s still a decent space, if your talking about ostrich specifically they are normally very active but the female is going through some treatment so there not as active as usual

it seems like a temporary sort of structure so maybe it’s easy to move?

It’s quite small and bare as ostrich enclosures go, and muddy currently which doesn’t seem ideal. With all the space they have spare currently, they could have done it a bit bigger and then maybe it wouldn’t have got churned up.
