For some reason I assumed it was far more than that but I'm not doubting you on it.

I have probably been overestimating the number of zoos that have fossa because of other collections in Europe that I saw in the zoochat gallery that hold this species.

Well, as noted there have been a fair few collections which have ceased to keep the species in the last few years - and of the five which still do, two are relatively recent acquisitions.

Shame as they are such an interesting species, as are narrow striped mongooses, and indeed euplerids in general.

The list of ex-fossa holders is worse than I thought, 7 have lost Fossa or closed in the last 5 years (if you count Ventura which also opened and shut during that time) : RSCC, Newquay, Belfast, Marwell, Folly Farm, Chessington and Ventura. Colchester lost them around 10 years ago
 
Whilst the no. of holders and individuals has decreased in the UK, the European and Global population in captivity is increasing. Whilst its a shame for those of us in the UK, at least we can appreciate that Fossa, in general, are doing "well" in captivity.

Do you know why these collections lost the species ?

I know that RSCC has closed but the others apparently are still open so what made them give up on the fossa ?
