After a decent showing, albeit a loss, in the last round the Zoological Society of London gets a shot at redemption against a collection which has a loss and a win under its belt, and as such has everything to play for.

The category is one we have already come across over in League A, so you should all be familiar with how it works: WATER, aka SEA, COAST, WETLANDS AND RIVER. So.... what does everyone think?

Get your debating socks on, guys ;)

I gave this one to ZSL.

Marwell have some species of birds or mammals found in or around aquatic environments like the ocean, coasts, wetlands and rivers like: The pygmy hippo, Humboldt penguin, Rio Cauca caecillian, bald ibis, greater flamingo, Asian short clawed otter and Alaotran reed lemur (not sure it qualified but I mention it as it inhabits wetlands).

However, ZSL just have far more aquatic species from all groups whether mammal, bird, amphibian, reptile, invertebrate and critically fish. For example, just in terms of mammals they have : Australian water rat, Asian short claw otter, pygmy hippo, seal lions, common hippos.

They don't have sealions unfortunately, as of last week!

I suppose the same could be considered with the historic aquarium as that has only recently closed too.

Indeed - this is the sort of situation where the following from my opening post introducing the new cup comes into play:

Given the fact that the last 9 months or so have seen many changes in the UK zoo world due to prolonged closures and the other pressures of the current situation - not least of all the permanant loss of Living Coasts - it is worth mentioning here that it is entirely permissible for people to judge the collections as of the pre-pandemic status quo.........The same goes for judging collections - positively or negatively - on how their past (collection, exhibits, history, conservation efforts etc) pertains to the challenge.

So, for instance, one could give ZSL extra credit because of the presence of said aquarium if you were able to justify your reasoning for said..... but equally someone who chose to score against ZSL because of the fact the aquarium was left to slowly decline into disrepair and ultimate closure would *also* be allowed to do so.

I agree but why isn't there an option for example of ZSl 3 /2 Marwell on the poll ?

Because I often think that when I do these cups depending on the institution (for example the other cup thread of ZSEA vs Twycross) that this is what I would put it at in terms of points.

The first iteration of the British Isles cup earlier this year *did* actually give the option for a bonus point to be given to add more subtlety to a vote if someone thought this was needed, something being tested out alongside the revamped match structure with an eye to working out the feasibility of these new mechanics before the next worldwide Zoo Cup, but when planning this revived version and asking me to run it on his behalf, @CGSwans told me he would prefer not to test both mechanics and as such requested I scrap the "bonus vote" option and focus on testing the new match structure.

Hmmmm thats a bit of a shame as I often think I would select that option of 3 / 2 if I could with some of the zoos in the cup.

To be honest, scores would be a little bit more balanced if more people were taking part in these matches (and therefore more arguments were made on both sides) too :P I know what you mean, though - a little more subtlety would sometimes be handy!

I'm suprised more people dont participate as these kind of comparisons are often drawn in forum comments anyway and these polls are a chance for people to put these opinions to effect and see them collated with others.

If you look at some of the threads from the abortive first iteration of these threads earlier this year, you can see that they were drawing a LOT more total votes..... for instance:

British Isles Cup Group A: Edinburgh vs Aspinall

I suspect a lot of people don't realise the threads have resumed, alas.

I don't know why they wouldn't when they are registered as new posts, yes, a shame as it is a chance to put thoughts into actions.
