-There are now 2 white rhinos in zoo center at the bronx zoo. They are where the indian rhino used to be which was origionally for elephants. They have the former elephant yard which is a good size for the two rhinos.

-The spiney forest part of madagascar is now netted over. It ruins the view but it is still a great exhibit.

I don't know why they would do that with the spiney forest. Also, it would have been really cool if they got black rhinos instead as that exhibit is perfect for them. White rhinos would work better out on the African Savanna exhibits.

Regarding the white rhinos, the zoo center exhibit is only temporary.

Have the takin arrived yet?

Are the White Rhinos a new species for the zoo (I mean in a historical sense)?

What is the plan with white rhino? Is there a grand design? When we talk exhibit, what is the facility like you are referring to?

I would personally first and foremost - in a city zoo setting - acquire black rhinos which are solitary and are more endangered anyway.

The bronx zoos is not really a city zoo its 265 acres. I have posted pictures of there indoor habitat in the bronx zoo gallery a few days ago. It basically a concrete floor covered in part by hay with to side sections that can be separated. Its not pretty but is functional and has a nice outdoor exhibit.

Baby okapi! White rhinos [for the first time in over 30 years]! I ABSOLUTELY NEED TO GET DOWN TO THE BRONX! :D!!!

Once your outside the zoo though, its about as urban as it gets though. Also, no rhino holding area is going to be pretty, just a thought. The outdoor yards around the zoo center are quite nice.

Yes the outside yards are very nice they were renovated in the late 1980's. I hope that eventually they will build a new rhino exhibit in the empty hoofstock yards near wild asia.

They netted the spiny forest over because the lemurs were trying to escape constantly, and a keeper always had to stand near the exhibit so a lemur wouldn't get out. I saw a lemur myself trying to get out. It does ruin the view a bit, but it's worth it.
